on the crapper...
I am getting seasick driving my truck. It bounces like an amusement park ride going down the road. Ok that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it bounces unpleasantly. I think it is the tires or the tires not being centered on the beadlocks.

I don't think it is the shocks, because it doesn't bounce after bumps in the road. I notice it most when accelerating or coasting. It is bouncy probly 30% of the time and not the other 70%. It doesn't seem to matter if the tires are warm or cold, so I don't think it is just flat spots on the bias plys. I don't feel it in the steering wheel but sometimes it seems to be coming from the front end (I can see the hood going up and down) and sometimes from the rear.

Details:

Suspension: 4" trail master lift with super-stiff front springs and rear blocks. The shocks are also trail master. The rears are inboarded with the DIY4x kit, but are leaning in at about the same angle that the stock shocks lean fore and aft. The lower mounts are just inboard of the springs and the uppers are in the furthest out position.

Axles: 14BFF reaar with 4.88 gears and a detroit. 8 lug 10B front. Hubs seem fine. The left front wheel bearings are a bit tight, but other than that everything seems fine, There is no leakage at the rear hub seal so I doubt the axles are bent.

Wheels/Tires: I believe they are 15x10 Eaton steel wheels with Allied beadlocks. The tires are 38" Super Swampers. I am the second owner of both. There is no apparent damage to the wheels and I would guess the tires have 90% + tread left with no apparent funny wear. I have about 300 grams of airsoft pellets in each tire. See avatar.

I measured the tires after a ~5 mile drive to warm them up and get rid of the flat spots. The run out is:

Left Rear: 5/16"
Right Rear: 3/16"
Left Front: 5/16"
Left Rear: 1/4"

The "tall" part of the tires were about 180* from the "short" part of the tires. I think I am getting the bounces when the tall parts of the tires are "in phase" on one of the axles.

I see several possibilities:

1. I screwed up and didn't get the tires centered on the beadlocks when I put the airsoft pellets in. However the Allied beadlock ring is supposed to be self centering and I followed their procedure for alternately tightening the bolts. I even did it in 3 stages. Could be off by that much?

2. The tires are just that much out of round. Is that normal?

3. There is a little extra material under the bead on the tires. It partly interferes with the beadlock ring bolts. Could that have pushed the tire off center on the bead? See crappy pic.

4. I didn't drive enough to get rid of the flat spots before measuing.

5. The PO mounted the tires wrong and now they have taken a "set" off center from the bead.

6. I am a wuss and I just need to quit whining and take dramamine before taking the truck anywhere. :D

Any ideas? Sorry 'bout the long post, but I wanted to include all the important info in the first post.

I think if i had square tires my rig would bounce as well.

Seriously, Greg had the same issues until he had his swampers skimmed at a local tire shop here before he moved back east. He might still have a pic of the 1/4" of tread that was removed from one tire.

my SSR's bounced my truck at highways speeds, i thought it was normal.... then i took them off and bolted up my Michelin XZL's and realized that my vision didnt have to be blurred by vibrations while driving down the road...

oh yea and when completely worn on one side, 180* opposite there was over 1/4" or tread. these were mounted on regular alloy wheels-- so no excusing the tires as being mounted uncentered... sometimes interco products seem like the quality control just wasnt there for that batch

Yep, Interco tires are well known for being out of round. Basically, they're not meant for the street. If you drive bias ply swampers on the street, this is the kind of thing you get to deal with.

It sounds like #6 was correct. :doah:

So most people who claim their truck rides like a caddy are :screwy: :D

I'd be interested to know more about having the high spots shaved off. I wouldn't imagine most tire shops can do that sort of thing.

Start calling around to different tire shops in your area (think commercial type shops that sell tires only). I don't remember what Greg paid to have his swampers skimmed but IIRC it was close to $150.00 for 5 tires.

I'd double check Option #1...

It's pretty easy to get the bead slightly misaligned on a 16.5" tire (Is that what you're running, I read too fast)??

There are mold marks close to the rim area that will show you if you are not seated evenly....part of the mold line will be under the rim lip and part will be showing on the opposite side. I had that problem initially when I first mounted my tires. Once that's confirmed/corrected.....whatever runout is left in the tire is truly a result of an out-of-round tire and no amount of airsoft pellets or lead weights will fix it.

Get the tires "trued" if you really want a nice ride. It's an amazing difference.

Search for my thread about it....I think I recently added a tag called "truing" or "round swamper" or something to help with searches.

hmm i may be realy lucky i had a set of 36 TSLs that where balanced and road as smooth as glass just as good as my 285 M/Ts i had before them, and had unbalanced 38.5 boggers that road awesome not perfect but completely livable... my truck has balanced XMLs now and its bounces down teh road so bad it feels like my teeth are gonna rattle out

When 44in. gumbo monster mudders first came out I bought a set. Had them put on 14x16.5 rims and they vibrated like crazy. I called Gateway tire and asked them about it. They said there is 6% more rubber in one spot on the tire then the rest of the tire, cause that is where they overlap the outer layer that is the tread itself. They told me to get the tires shaved and balanced. I found a place that did tractor trailer truck tires that did the shaving. I was told to put about 30lbs of air in the tires and drive it there. When I got there they put my truck up on jackstands and lowered the air pressure to what i was going to run. They shaved my tires which took off about 1/4in on one side. Cost me $100. then I took the truck and had them balanced and WOW I could drive that thing 90 mph and I rode like a car. So the bigger the tire the more out of round they could be.
Just my experience with big tires.
