Are the old bearing races ok to reuse if they are still smooth or should they be replaced with the bearings if need to be replaced hod do you get them out without a big socket or press to push on them with

I agree, they are manufactured as a pair, and the old ones are easy enough to drive out.

Always repeat ALWAYS replace race when replacing bearings. If you don't you will be replacing the bearing again shortly.

If you have a press, and can get the part to it, then that will work fine.

If not then use a punch and hammer being careful not to damage the race bore.

To install you can grind the outside of the old race until it can slide easy into the bore then use it as a install tool making sure to tap the new race evenly into the bore. You will turn it over so thin edge meets thin edge so to give a good surface to tap with the hammer.

You can handle this no problems :thumb:

I use a flat head screwdriver to get them out, and a hammer. Normally pop out easy. Then yes use the old one to put the new one in. Bearings (at least the ones ive always bought) come with new races, why not put them in??:dunno:

While I completely agree with what has been said I have in the past used an old race, all the ones I have used have been in good shape. Never had an issue and always planned on replacing the race, I never did.

As far as bearings go I asked our local bearing place if the race and bearing are a matched set and only certain ones are. Many bearings you can buy just the bearing or just the race, even when they come in the same box they are not always a matched set.

He is also the one that told me 9 times out of 10 if the race shows no wear that you can see with the naked eye it would be fine to re use it. Of course 1 time out of 10 will cause the bearing to fail usually catastrophically, and cause other damage too, so unless its an emergency I replace both

I re-used a race once in an emergency situation. That was at least 5 years ago and I never went back to fix it right so it must have worked out ok:doah:

That being said, I normally always replace the race when I replace the bearings. They are fairly easy and even if they dont come with the bearing they are not that expensive.

imo, why bother for $25... not worth my time to drive there...

I have found it less stressful to just buy my own special tools. The Auto Zone here never has the tools in, always "loaned" out to some entitled person that never brings them back. I have some outboard tools I'll never use again, but if I need them I have them.

I agree. I usually buy them too provided they are cheap enough. When I replaced the cam in my Harley last year I bought a few specialty tools that I will likely never use again but it was half the cost of paying someone else to do the work

I think the rentals are awesome, well, I'm guessing it's cool for the weekend warrior... tho I'm sure there's times they are damaged, or out or something like that... and in a pinch can really save someone on a repair...

I just have a thing about my time and effort.. it's like my bud who will spend a whole saturday, drive all over town to 8 stores, to save $9 on something.. probably wastes more in gas...

I don't get off the couch for $9...

I know what you are saying. Kinda funny, I used the puller I made about 15 years ago today to pull the balancer off my engine I'm building. Works better than a store bought.

Ok got the races out and new ones back in just when I went to put the hub back on I realized that the inner race of the bearing (cause it came apart) is stuck on the spindle how do I go about trying to get that off
