I am thinking of buying a 88 chevy 3500 4x4 with a 454. Is there anything in particular that I should beware of? I thought I had heard about tranny problems within this year range, any truth to that, and which tranny does it have? Should have a 400 tranny...bout the strongest you will find.

The problems are mostly from 82-86 for the 1/2 and 3/4ton truck that have the 700r4.
The 1tons had th400 which is never a problem.
87 and up got upgrades for the 700r4 so it got better.
It still sin't the best but can handle more than the earlier ones.
A 454 wouldn't have a 700 behind it because there is no way it can handle the power so you must have the th400.
Now you only need to check the truck for obvious problems.
