Ok, I know this is dumb, but I can't be the only one.

For the past few years, my truck in reverse, up an incline, has given me what I thought was clutch chatter via axle hop. I figured the clutch was worn, and my clutches have always outlasted my engines, so I was going to wait for the 6.0 swap to replace it. After replacing my worn out shocks (and cracked frame), I noticed it no longer chatters or axle hops in reverse. SUCCESS!!!

Just in case anyone else has noticed the same behavior. Let me be the dumb one to post this; let the replies fly ;-)

My old "Motor's" manuals always listed bad shocks, motor or tranny mounts as some of the possible causes of clutch chatter..

You likely were feeling wheel hop, due to no shock action letting the leaf spring "bounce" ,and the cracked frame didn't help either probably..

I only wish I could be so lucky to replace a pair of dead shocks and not have to do the clutch too,to get rid of chatter..with me,it was always a bad pressure plate (3 finger style)--or I tweaked the clutch disc hub while putting the transmission back in..:doah:..
I had only one out of 4 clutches I put in various vehicles work nice and smooth, most of them chattered pretty badly either right away,or shortly afterward..I just learned to live with it..

Haha, I never even considered a bad motor mount; which would have made sense in one direction and not another as torque is applied differently.
