One of the bolts that holds the TH350 to the Block, in the 1 o'clock position...it's the one that holds the dipstick tube down...is stripped. Is that fixable if I remove the transmission...some kind of heli-coil or is there something better?

How does this happen and should I be concerned that there could be more damage maybe caused by an improperly installed transmission?

That bolt is supposed to be about 1/4" longer than the others.
If they used the wrong bolt, it would be too short, and it would strip the thread but if that is the case putting a longer bolt would be all you need.
One out of the 6 bolts having some of thread, in that case, stripped is OK and no need for helicoil.
If the bolt is longer than the others and there is no thread left not stripped, then Helicoil it is, and that is a standard thread easy to find helicoil for it.

the bolt itself being stripped is no issue, the thread hole being another kettle of crackers...

run a threadchaser (not a tap) thru the threads and check a new 3/8's bolt in the cleaned up thread hole...

I'm not sure which it is yet....I noticed it a while back when replacing the o-ring on the dipstick tube. I am thinking that the hole is bigger than it is supposed to be...which would mean the hole is stripped...if I drop the trans I will be able to get a good look at it.

I'd love to pull the engine out as well...but crap, I don't have a hoist or a stand. Would be nice to get that out and clean up the engine compartment and degrease the engine itself.

Wait a minute...I could use the engine hoist to drop the transmission...but could I use it to get it back on? Would save not having to buy the trans jack....

I am thinking that now is the time to fix that leaky transmission.... before I spray the inside floorboard...remove the tunnel cover and get all that done first...Will still cost around $300 to get the TH350 rebuilt with me taking it to them.

Hmmmmm....number one complaint about that engine hoist is that it is too short to lift an engine out of a truck...

It's not really short, it lifts enough, but I usually will lower the truck to get the engine out, either take the wheels off and drop it on the ground, or deflate the tires.
And if you take the tunel cover off you can use the engine hoist to lift the tranny into place.

he's got the front clip off...

yes, Chief, most times you can stick the hoist arm in the cab with the cover off and drop a t-case... tho with my custom floor, I'm a bit foggy on how much room the factory floor hole gives ya...

but if ya buy the hoist, just pull the motor and tranny out in one shot out the front, much easier than dropping the trans.. just drop the t-case down first.. and you wont have to buy a tranny jack that way...

Thanks. I'll start a new thread when I start to do this...

Plenty of room to get the trans in with the engine hoist, thats how I did it on my 73. So easy to do.
