I put a new belt on my vette the other day becouse the one on there was getting old. This belt wraps around the alt. / water pump./ harmonic balancer. well afterwards I started getting a high pitch squeal when i would raise the rpms. I have tightened the sh#t out of it and it still does it when i rev the engine up. is this a bad belt or is something else wrong ?

Check the pulleys on all components. It is possible there is a bad bearing in either the water pump or alternator that is allowing the pulley to tilt a little. I have seen this cause a squeal, even with a new, tight belt.

Hmm, didnt think of that.
the water pump bearing could be bad, its an old water pump.
it just seemed to start when i put the belt on.
though it doesnt make any noise till i get up to about 2500 rpms.
I will loosen the belt up and see what happens.
then I guess I will try another belt and see if thats it.

It is possible the old belt was worn enough for you not to notice it, but now with the new belt it is causing the problem. It is also possible that I am way off base, but this is something that I have seen in the past.
