I may order me a small drill press, is 6.2 amp decent for a hobbiest? I'm looking at a 1/2" SKIL 10" / 5 spd, 6.2 amp drill press on Amazon (4.4 out of 5 from 290 reviews).

I’ve got a small I think it’s ryobi or delta or something at home. It doesn’t get used much but it’s handy when I need it.

@centexk5 any idea what size motor you have? If so, is it strong enough for your liking?

I just don’t want to get one that stalls or gets stuck all the time.

We have a small one at work that gets stuck all the time, I can look Monday and see what the hp is….in wood it works great and thin metal with small bits but you put a 1/2 but in there and she struggles.

I’m seeing a lot with 2~3 amp motors so I’m hoping the 6.2 is a healthy size.

I’ll check tomorrow when I head to the shop. My tired ass is a tequila and a movie into falling asleep.

That’s about how mine is. It works for what I do but there are limits.

I will have to check mine but it's the biggest on harbor freight had and I never have a problem with any size.
I do have a problem with the platform not holding it's position sometimes, it will swivel sideways or even tilt.

I hadn’t realized until now that some are amps and others hp. I checked the Skil website but there’s no hp spec, I may call their tech line Monday.

I’m not stuck on the Skil brand, I just noticed Amazon has it on sale for $179 and I’d like to stay around $200. I struggle to justify $300+ for one that will hardly get used.

That is why 20 years ago I chose the harbor freight for $125 and it still is like new, not used much but there every time I needed it

I bought mine as teenagerwas $100.00 1970s, like new second hand. A lot of money to me, and yet it is a Taiwanese import. USA would have been 5x times that used.
Has served well. Doesn't get used every day but is always ready needed.

I bought a drill press this evening.

Lowe’s has a Kobalt 6.5a, 1 hp, 10”, bench top unit for $199 so I grabbed it.

Now I have to find somewhere to put it. :doah:

Taiwan has always been great quality.
When I was in the middle east and I wanted good quality tools it was either German for unobtainium or American brands made in Taiwan for reasonable price. That was in the 80's and 90's

Yes this machine has only had the orginal chuck replaced and that was last year
