I'm looking at getting one very soon to bend some metal for my new seats. My father told me to look for one with a quick release so you can slide it faster and then tighten. I haven't found any like this yet but only had a quick peek when I was at Lowes.

What are you guys running on your workbenches?

Wilton was/is the chit when it comes to vises...

i've never heard of that... mine swivels, and is super handy for fabbing, grinding parts to aim your sparks, etc...

There, fixed it for ya. There is no comparison to a Wilton vice IMO. I have beat the living crap out of one for 22 years at my old shop and it NEVER let me down. I now have one on my work bench in my garage.

Look on CL for a vise, I think the quick release is on a wood type clamp/vise.

The quick release thing is old. Way back in Jr. High, my woodshop had large tables with a vise on each corner. It had the quick pull out thing.

If you aren't a metal worker and just a light weekend warrior, I have a blue vise from Home Depot that worker great. Swivel, big pad for beatin stuff, and good jaws. I got it and my Ryobi 6" bench grinder for cheap. It's plenty enough for me. :)

Ive only seen quick release "vise" type things on a chop saw vice, WORKS GREAT ON A CHOP SAW... I would never want one on a solid vice though, seems like it would make it less strong

I do however have the rockwell jawhorse, not gonna lie, this thing is BAD FREEKIN A$$!!! But its not a big hefty vise for bending metal and beating on, but it does provide a quick clamping work station that you can bring anywhere, and it has like 2000 pounds of clamping force... What the box said anyways, i have squashed steel pipe in it on accident...:doah:

NOT SAYING GET IT IN PLACE OF A VISE... its just the only quick action clamping tool that I would ever consider...

So, what's the best Wilton vise to get?

Considering I'd be doing light fab., and general garage junk...

Either a Machinist vise or a Tradesman vise is what you want. I personally have the Tradesman 1745 vise on my work bench. The only difference between the two is the Tradesman vise also has an internal jaw for tubing/pipe whereas the Machinist vise does not. As far as what size you should get will all depend on how wide of something you'll ever need/want to clamp. I wished my vise had a wider jaw opening but for the most part it handles my needs. These vises aren't cheap, I found mine on e-bay (it's a Snap-on made by Wilton) and was brand new in the box delivered for $200.

Here is my vise but mine is red. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004XPVG/?tag=wmtogr-20

If I had to buy another vise this would be my next choice since the jaw opening is 2 1/2" greater than my current vise. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004XPVI/?tag=wmtogr-20

Great replies here, thanks guys  I'm going to check you the local Grainger store here, they have Wilton and I will go to Home Depot too to pick up a couple other things so will check out both. Tomorrow.

Went out (in the freezing cold :D) to snap a pic of our old wilton. This thing is ancient!!! My gpa welded the sucker to the bench way back in the day. Its def stood the test of time I would say:waytogo:
