Is there any interest in getting a jd2 style bender project going for the members here? I have a Bridgeport machine and a bender and could machine these parts up. If there is enough interest. I'm thinking 10 people, which would get me a price break on the steel. Could even use thicker steel for those that plan on continually bending heavy tubing.
 
I'm definitely down for it. 5/8" would be nice since it'd last forever but 1/2" definitely works.
 
Okay, when we get enough people or close to it, we'll decide on thickness. I'll head out to the metal supermarket tomorrow or wed. and get a price on steel.

Would there be any improvements on the JD2 type design that we can think of?

It'd be nice (but not probable) if we could figure out an attachment that'd let us use and air over hydraulic jack like this: http://www.uneedtools.com/airhydraulic-long-jack-p-1762.html instead of a $pendy ram easily.

I think that if one were to mount it by the base but use a sort of stirrup setup to move the pivot point up to where it is on normal air/hydro bender setups it could work well.

Just a crazy thought.

I'm gonna head on down to the metal supermarket (not kidding, that's really the name of the shop) tomorrow. We have to decide how thick we want to make the parts out of though. I'm hoping to keep the price under $75-80.
 
Well, hopefully ~ $80 for the arms plus pins (I still need to source them), a die ($260 + shipping for a 240 degree 1.75" 5.5" CLR JD2 die), and a handle and stand can be made or purchased, neither is very expensive. Also a degree ring if you want one for repeatability. I can look all this stuff up or you can go to JD2's site and get an idea. I'm sure it could be had through a vendor for cheaper.
 
Handle is simply a 4' piece of 1"X2" or longer. I've got probably 50' of it in the shop right now.
 
Pins could be Grade 8 bolts. Now if only someone with a lathe would pipe up and offer their services. Money could be saved on the follower by machining both sides for different diameter tubing.
 
I made my own stand out of scrap. I'm sure if you hit your local metal recycler you could do it for $10 or less too.
 
ryan... delivery of the model 4 is scheduled for the 11th... I already have the bend ez pro software... came to about 2500 with 2 dies and the software....
I sure hope we can make a little of this back and still make them cheap for the guys

I have a lathe, 11" swing, 33" between centers. What's this follower look like? If it is what I imagine, a milling machine with a ball end mill of the appropriate diameter would probably work better. Show me a pic of what you're talking about, I'll let you know it it's within my capabilites.
 
You would need one massive ball end mill unless you have CNC control. That follower needs to be the same diameter channel as the tube you're bending. Actually, fixturing it vertical and using a small boring head or modified fly-cutter might be better?

And you might want to incorporate something like the bushing from a NE5 so that the frame does not collapse when you remove the die.
