Okay, I went to throw the new tailshaft housing on today, and it won't line up with the opening on the t-case because the tailshaft is not exactly centered. I have to apply pressure to the tailshaft one way to get the opening on the housing to line up.

Is this normal or is it possible that I royally screwed something up when I threw my driveshaft? For those who didn't see the carnage, the u-joint gave at the yoke.

Thanks.

Well I can get a pic, but it won't really do much good, the shaft is just off like 1/4 inch keeping it from lining up. It'd be hard to get a picture to show the difference.

you can keep posting in the same thread you had before with this problem. this is what the 3rd?

anyway, can you rotate the shaft? put the tranny in neutral and the t-case in 4wd, and spin it by the front driveshaft. if it moves around then it's bent.

Hmm, I'll have to look at it tomorrow. I guess if it moves in an elliptical motion, it's bent. I guess the only way to do anything about it is to replace the whole transfer case? Or rebuild it?

And I would post in the same thread, but for some reason everytime I do that, it gets ignored?

Thanks for the help guys.

On a 208 the main shaft is centered by a bearing in the tail shaft case and pocket bearings in the input gear. When you remove the tail shaft it's normal to have to lift the main shaft for re-installation. If you suspect a bent shaft than run the xfer case up after re-installing the rear housing and inspect for run-out.

So this is normal? What do you mean by running the xfer case up after reinstalling the housing?

So how exactly do I get this housing on? Push on the tailshaft one way or the other to wiggle it on? I had the RTV all on the housing, ready to slap it on, and couldn't get it on. I'm gonna have another go at it tomorrow.
