Looking for a basic trickle or starter charger. What brands and features to look for? Have always had shop ones and need one at home now.

Weve always had good luck with Schumacher

If you want the best look for a Ctek. They are a bit hard to find (I think Interstate Batteries carries them), but great chargers.
They come with a pigtail that you can connect to your battery and just plug in for full time maintenance.
Their web site has some pretty good info.

I second the schumacher. this is the one i use at home. its never failed me. and I've loaded it up on 200a start setting with dead diesels in the heart winter. pure gold.

the first one i bought was a cheap Vector brand one, total trash, fan killed on me and it overheated thus killing itself. sense then i bought a diehard one and its pretty good. for starting i use a optima battery on a dolly and some jumper cables. for that i have a Battery Tender that keeps it charged. for autos you dont drive all the time a Battery Tender is the way to go. hook it up and forget about it. it wont start a dead battery but it keeps them charged
