Best/Cheapest Outlet for New GM Crate Engine??

From what I can determine the cost to get my "M" series 1986 350 engine rebuilt and installed would approach the cost of replacing with a new GM crate engine. Considering this, I am exploring the options and beginning to shop around.

GM does not make an exact "M" series replacement engine for this year range any more so I need to determine which would be a suitable replacement engine and shop the price around.

Anyone have any opinion where is the best and cheapest outlet for new GM crate engines?

Summit Racing sells a 260hp/350ftlb Crate for just over $1,400:

I almost bought the first one for my old 79 before I got ahold of my '81 w/ the fresh 383 Stroker in it. Summit is one of the cheapest I've found and I've always had good luck when ordering from them.

www.paceparts.com usually has some really good prices. And they have great customer service.

sallee chevrolet also sells them. Never really compared prices between all of them though.

gmpartsdirect.com would also be a source if you can get a part number, but their shipping MIGHT be horrendous, but that would have to be compared to any of the other "mail order" places you consider.

I doubt a local dealers parts counter could do any better, but you never know with this stuff. Can't believe it would hurt to ask, again if you have a part #.
