I have been looking for a blazer (mid 80's vintage), and the prices are soo high. In poor shape people want $1000+ (vehicle needing extensive body work, motor work or other drivetrain work if it even has an engine).. and in decent shape or good shape there running $3000-$4000+ around here if you can find it.. I recent looked at a hacked up blazer (late 70's) that had the dash cut out f it (replaced with a home made aluminum dash), cut fenders, missing rear seat and wheeled pretty hard and he wanted $2500.

Where do people find there trucks for cheap? I dont mind some body work or mechanical work, but these prices are out of control. when my whole budget is $5k for lift tires and truck etc. together.

I also see blazers sitting and rotting in yards and they wont part with them or they make an outrageous price (another example, a rotting 80's blazer with a plow that hasnt moved in 10yrs wants $2k)..

or should i say hell with it and put it into my 2005 silverado? (which already has cranked bars, light bar, just mild upgrades, sits on 20's (factory)

Buy something from out West, already built for $4500....spend the last $500 on gas to drive it home. :deal:

I'd never buy a truck from around here.... usually they are in lousy shape and priced way higher than other parts of the country.

what gets me id that if I want a Dana 60/ 14BFF combo seperated from a truck its anywhere up to $2000 in rusty rebuildable shape. but i can go and buy the whole truck for $4000 or so

IME, you've got to shop around and hope you get lucky. Prices have been creeping up all over the country on all the solid-axle Blazers, especially on the 1st gens and early (full convertible) square bodies.

I'm a pretty avid reader of craigslist and The Little Nickel. I've noticed that most K5s that would have sold for $1500-$3000 two years ago have now almost doubled in asking price in this part of the country. Then you always get the few wacky folks who think that their stock-but-beat-to-piss '75 Blazer is worth $10K, because hey, it says it in the NADA guide...and of course, there are always one or two like this.

Overall, I think you need to keep your eyes peeled at all times if you're seriously looking for a good ride. Solid rigs that are decently priced sell VERY quickly. I saw an ad last week for a pretty nice looking '77 Suburban for $2200, so I called. The guy had the ad up for 2 hours, and by the time I talked to him, the truck was gone.

I wish i never got rid of my 85 blazer. Grrrrr..

i wish lift laws werent s tough here, Id sas my truck when i got the money to make it easier. lol

but i really like the half top blazers and have been looking, and as you said their either beat badly or they are good shape, mega money truck

I want project condition, if it takes me 3 years to build it then thats fine, but still people want big money, but i also dont want to start with a frame and rusty panels either

for example, my friend has his 80's GMC 4x4 for sale for $15,000. it is a manual trans with a 6BT cummins engine, 1/2 ton axles, with 35's and firestone airbags above the springs and a 205 transfer case..while its a nice truck and has alot of conversions. too me its only maybe max $8000.

The prices aren't super bad out here in Vegas, but they are creeping up. You can get a decent truck, lifted with newer tires and such for between 1800 and 3000. I wanted a diesel and was lucky to find one period, he was asking $2000, I gave him $1500. Although, it was stock, and I have had to fix and replace a few things, so after I pick up my tires this weekend, I will have dropped another 1500 into it, making for a grand total of $3000. That is with new 33s, new 15x10 wheels, new radiator, and a few trips to the junkyard and auto zone for misc. parts. But I wanted a diesel so I am paying a premium.

Here are some examples locally...
Got this guy down to $1750 when I was talking to him

those are nice but i live in mass and everything rusts terribly and find a truck like those would be few and far between and probably would fetch upwards of $6k maybe more

That sucks, I hate rust. That was one of the main requirements with the truck I just bought, NO RUST. My first Blazer had rust and it sucked. I'd say it might be worth coming out to these parts and buying one, but shipping costs are high and K5s aren't exactly known for their high MPG.

maybe some day i can take a trip out there with a pocket of cash.. shouldve stayed in texas

Its worth taking a short vacation out west when your looking for a decent truck...i know several people who did just that and have got some very nice older trucks, drove them for awhile, went to the cruise nights, and enjoyed them instead of constantly working on them---and they didn't have a re-hashed former rotbox... and next thing you know, someone here offers them triple what they got it for,so they reluctantly sell it,then fly out there again and look for another one...................................................................................................Take it from a guy who bought many massachussets rotboxes and had to weld ,bolt and pop-rivet them back together to make them roadworthy too many times--its a hell of a lot easier to buy a rust free truck to begin with, than to do all that restoration, which wont last all that long here after its done--not when you can buy a decent truck somewhere else and either ship it or drive it back..........................................................................shipping does suck nowadays though, fuel costs make it expensive to ship trucks, and driving them back may not always be cheap either...thats about the only disadvantage though, trucks stay nice a lot longer than they do in many other parts of the country...North and South Carolina still have some prime examples, but they aren't cheap really--a lot closer than AZ is though,to drive one home !..

When the weather gets better here, maybe the summer time ill find an area that ahs a few of them and take a trip.. i may drive them home depending on the condition, just to see the land

They are around here, just few and far between. You just need to keep looking. I had a 75 that was from Cali, w/not rust, an 87 from Vegas no rust, and just picked up a 91 that was from out west....it was in a junkyard complete. Keep searching CL, but be ready to jump on a good deal. I do a search Searchtempest or something similar, multiple states. You can find something here that came from out west. Otherwise I would save some cash, fly out west in the spring and buy a cheap rust free one.

I paid $3K for mine.
In this condition.

The motor was a fresh rebuild, and ran great.
The tranny was in okay shape, not new.
Axles were perfect, and re-geared to 3.73, Gov lock'd rear.
New 35's/rims, new EVERYTHING under the hood.
New White paint job... It's hard to smell a turd under fresh paint... ;)

The T-case needed a rebuild, BAD.....
The floor pan is on it's 2nd last leg. (This K5 was from Canada...Srsly.)
PO ****er'd up a lot of the wiring.
Exhaust looks like a bb gun shooting alley.
Etc...

All in all, I think I paid about a thousand too much... :haha:

Look out west man.

Plenty of us out here that can go and look at a truck, even buy it and keep it for a couple months for ya until you can come and get it.

I have seen blazers with tons locked front and rear with decent tires on em for well under 5k.

Might need some work but in working driving condition. We aren't quite as rust free as the southwest but alot better than where you are

I won't tell you that my K5 came up here from Texas and I bought it for $800.

oops.

My old man bought a '75 K5, on Ton's. (60/14)
42" tires, 12" lift, new exhaust, etc., etc., for $600!!!

The motor had a bad knock to it.
The kid asked 1000, my dad said 700-cash.
The kid actually lowered to $600!!! :haha:

My old man replaced the engine, as he'd built engines his whole life.
And, wheeled the pee out of it! :thumb:

He resold it for a few thousand.
Made a decent profit.

My point is.... Screamin' deals are definitely out here, in the West.:waytogo:
