Which generation 454 block would be best to build a 496? A Mark IV or a Gen 6? Couldn't find a clear answer on the web or on the forums...

They're roller blocks as well, not?

Martin

Yes they came factory with roller cams but that doesn't stop a person from running a flat tappet cam.

Something to look out for is not all blocks are drilled to accept a fuel pump pushrod assuming you wanted to run a carb and keep a mechanical fuel pump.

Why would anyone ever choose to run a flat tappet cam instead of a roller?

Well I have a good opportunity to get mark iv for cheap... Either block will work fine right?

Nothing wrong with a gen IV, that's what most people have (I just built one for mine). The advantage to the gen VI is it's (re)design fixes/improves a few inherent problems with the previous versions (2pc rear seal, etc).

IMO, the gen V is the one to avoid - not because it's truly bad just has a few odd things a builder needs to be aware of (gen specific heads or special gaskets, no mech fuel pump boss, etc).
