best HEI dist. for the money

my budddy has a 87 k5, he wants to upgrade to HEI
so i want to know which is the best for the money?
also to install it it is just 3 wires right, 12v+ gnd. and tach if you got it?
i cant rember what i hooked up on mine.

the 87 should already have a version of the H.E.I now. A small cap style with a seperate coil. It's computer controlled timing though. A regular H.E.I will not work.

should still be able to swap a HEI in right?

no. A regular HEI is NOT set up for the stock computer. The distributer in there now IS an HEI, just the later model with a seperate coil. It will drop in, but it won't run!! The EFI needs the signal from the stock distributer. The wiring is different. Rewiring would be a waste as the Seperate coil design IS better as the coil doesn't get as hot as with the "older" desighn HEI.

hummm ok, the reason he wants to change is that the hole in the dist. for the cap is stripped out, so i guess he just needs to go get one from a junk yard if he can find it.

You can buy a new one for about 150 bucks for stock,I think msd makes a drop in replacement too.
