Best jack/method to get NP208 in/out

I had one of the first one you linked, used it once and sold it. If you were only doing trannies, maybe, but for mixed purposes, I was underwhelmed.

My go-to for weird-shaped lifting is

(they have a coupla part #'s for the same thing, search for "ATV jack")

and then short chunks of 4x4 lumber. Here it is R&R'ing my 203-doubler-205 set

I've done the bumpers and sliders with it, lifted up each side of the truck when I did the body pucks and mounts, and dropped the tank for the shackle flip.

I do find a ratcheting strap is handy to keep irregularly shaped loads in place, so that second jack you mention would do well there. I just use a regular strap around mine.

Whatever you pick, do take a good look at the casters. The ones on the ATV jack are like a floor jack, are fixed direction on the one end and suck ASS to try and maneuver. I ended up putting some solid metal swivel casters on mine (nice ones from Lowe's, not Harbor Freight crap) as you see in the second pic. It's now infinitely easier when you're trying to weasel the T-case out from between the exhaust.

dremu, my atv has been gone for years, but I kept that jack for this exact reason. Works great. I did my tranny and T case all by myself. Lots of work but totally doable. :waytogo:
 
I went and bought that second one before I saw your post. Should be good enough, but I could see where yours might work better for holding up a bumper or something like that. The holder is pretty little on the one I bought.
 
I used mine for an NP205. A little heavier then 75lbs :D. An NP 205 weighs almost as much as I do. I've got about 30lbs on a 205 :haha:.
 
Just a 208? Bench press :D

x2, may not be the safest way but that's how Ive always done it. I don't worry about lining up bolt holes. Just lift it the easiest way you can get ahold of it and get it on the input shaft. Then you can rotate to line up the holes and slide it into place.
 
Yeah, I know. I prefer to have a little more control until I understand how it all goes together. Never had one out before. 75 pounds isn't exactly light anyway. Dealing with the steering box during install was a PITA and I'd guess it was 40 pounds. Of course you have to hold that one while the bolts go in.

Eh, for those times you need it, drill some holes in that white top bit and bolt a coupla 2' long lumber scraps to it, voila, larger footprint. The scissor lift means you get about 1.5x the lift on this one, so prolly more convenient for that anyway.

And Scott, bench-pressing an aluminum case means you gotta be careful not to drop and break it :haha: As opposed to my cast iron monstrosities, which you gotta be care not to drop and break the driveway :doah:

Another vote for bench press.

You just have to get it splined up, and then it holds itself up.

I benched the 271 in and out of my Superduty the last 2 times I had it in and out. It's really not that big a deal. Also benched the borgwarner out of a '14 dodge 3500. That was a bit bigger than the 271.
