Quick questions for anyone out there that has an on board air system or some input on the subject. I wold like to add one on to my Jimmy but I'm a little overwhelmed by all of the options out there. I have looked back at some of the other previous post but would like to get some personal opinions. I'm leaning towards a Viair system since the seems fairly straight forward out of the box, but have also heard about some guys running the Puma compressors. I'm not to big of a fan of the york setup as I don't want to go yank parts from a junkyard or mount additional items on the engine. Ideally I would like to compressor to do several things run air tools for trail repairs if needed, be able to re inflate at least a 37" tire and be low maintenance and reliable. Any input is appreciated

Thanks

The electric ones are more spendy and lower output, but would be easier to mount.

Powered from the motor (i.e. York), you get tons of air at relatively low cost, but more work.

The electric compressors might eventually inflate a big tire, but 10-15 minutes a tire can add up to an hour of waiting, and you have to watch the duty cycle. Will the compressor even run continuously for an hour?

And yeah, I'm biased, and have a York :D

I am in the process of doing a York install now. I thought it would be cheaper. :doah: In the end I will have spent about as much as a basic electric system or CO2 set up.

I would suggest a CO2 tank and associated items. Faster than any of the electric pump air systems, even with the dual pumps. No additional items to mount and wire up and find space for in the truck, just need a secure place to mount the tank which is fairly small. And getting the CO2 tank refilled is pretty cheap too.

And easy to change from vehicle to other.:D

For the CO2 tanks do you know how many fills you can get out of one of those tanks? Looking at the cost I would expect quite a few hopefully. Anyone know if you can do a DIY Co2 tank?

I belive it like a welding tank or a propane tank. You can reload it as many times as you like or trade it out at a supply store. There is a date stamp on it and needs to be inspected at intervals. I want to say like every three to five years.

It costs me $20.00 per refill. I use mine ALOT!! And it lasts a couple weeks. I seem to switch tires twice a week. And use my impact alot with this. I dont use a compressor right now. Just this Co2 tank. I like it!!!!

Well I can tell you that an electric compressor bolted to your wheel well is very LOUD. Maybe I'll have more useful information after I get my setup all sorted.

I have 60 bucks in my york setup. Granted right now it will only fill tires but thats all i need it to do for now. I will add a tank later. Im just running a blow through chuck and just let it rip. Works badass

What's a "blow through chuck"? I'm gonna hafta look that up. So, I don't need the tank and pressure switch and everything else that supposedly goes along with it? If not I could be done with it at only $200 invested between the York and the SBC brackets I got from a CK5er. I only need to fill tires with it too.

I like my york, it was a little more in the beginning, I probably have $350 in it, but I bought all new parts and made my own bracket. It works great, will fill the 3 gallon tank from 0 - 125 psi in probably 20 seconds at idle. Fills tires and runs air tools faster than my 30 gallon 110V shop compressor. The only downfall is that is does foam some oil into the airline and you have to keep an eye on the oil level. I thought about getting an oil seperator but haven't done so.

Most electric ones that I know of are so slow they aren't worth waiting for. I think the C02 tank could probably work very well, but I wonder how long it will last? How many tires can you fill or how long can you run a die grinder or other air tool? Depending on how much you use it those fills could add up. At least with a york once you get past the initial investment the air is pretty much unlimited. However, the C02 tank would definitely be more dry air.

Its always a trade off, they all have their pros and cons.

its a regular chuck but has no check valve so it just blows through all the time. That way you can just let the york run and there is no load on it untill you stick a tire on it

That's my problem. To have a tank and all wired up and plumbed "properly" I have to spend at least another $100 (tank, switch, pop-off valve, gauge, fittings, etc). I have good hose that can be cut to length and I have a crimp tool at work to put the proper ends on the hose so it will look all nice. And I may finish it right in the future but for now I just want one of them blow through chucks.

What I was getting at was spending $300 on this York stuff I could've bought a CO2 set up and had it all set up and installed and working months ago. It'll be nice having unlimited air though.

Yeah I could see the advantage for the york having unlimited air but for me now I think the CO2 will be nice to have and eventually down the road maybe invest in a york setup.

I am using my factory A/C compressor, works great.

Bought a Harbor Freight electric air compressor stole the pressure switch and tank put them in the truck. The system works great when I forget and leave it on, the pressure switch blows so no air hose explosions. I use the factory A/C in dash switch to turn it on.

I have a distribution block with a line to the front, one to the rear and one under the hood.

A buddy ran a HF 3gal compressor/tank, tore it down for the parts and used his rangers A/C, he had to get some fittings from hardware store. But end result was into OBA for $100. works great and I bought the same thing for my k5 from HF for $30-40, and a york.
