I need a bit that will fit a 3/8" drill but the drill bit itself is 3/4"-1". Can't seem to find much around here...

I've called lowes and they're the only ones that have a 3/4" bit that'll fit a 3/8" drill but I need something around 1". Any ideas?

I even called a few machine shops to price out what turning down the shank of a 1" bit would cost........(not worth it:rolleyes:)

I'd tell you to send me one and I'll turn it down for you, but surely you can find someone local to turn one for you. Shouldn't take but a few minutes.

I've used a countersink bit to drill through steel plate. I drill a small pilot hole then start stepping up in size with countersink bits until i've reached the desired size. I just did this when building my new bumper brackets (1" hole for D shackle). This obviously will only work if the material you need to drill isn't too thick.

The step bits won't work ( at least I don't think they would).... and the turned down bits are BANK($20 for one 3/8" shank 3/4" bit), so I went with the harbor freight, $3 hole saw kit.... 3/4"-2 1/4". I'm sure there worthless with anything but wood and thin sheetmetal but they worked (barely).

PITA to get started on fiberglass... I had to reem out my motor mounts in my boat (basically make a 1/2 hole 3/4 or 1" so I could fill with epoxy) so the guide bit on the hole saw was useless.

I'm still looking for a cheap set of bits up to 1" that'll fit my 3/8 drill.... good to have when working on boats.

Never thought about the countersink idea..... probably right around 1".

Surely there is some sort of industrial supply place up by you. Gordon and Johnston industrial are two shops around here that I use and they both carry what you're looking for and sell stuff individually.

Hit up the yellowpages or something.

Redding is a small town.... about 80k.... We have the generic lowes, HF, ACE, etc. and the WAY overpriced small tool only shops that have everything, but no where to get decent "less common" tools at a reasonable price that I'm aware of.
