I've broken my Craftsman for the third time...I am tired of it...

Who makes the best ratchet ever made in history and if it is a Snap-On what series...and where can I get one that I can afford? :dunno::dunno:

I've broken several Craftsman 1/2" drive ratchets over the years. The teeth break or something and they start slipping. They always give me a new one but it's still a pain. I've never broken one of their 3/8" or 1/4" ones though.

I've never heard of anyone breaking a Snap On, but I'm not familiar at all with the different types. I'm sure some professional mechanic type will answer you soon. I would like to know what's the best rathchet as well.

I have also broken Crapsmen ratchets (1/2, and 3/8). I broke the 1/2' drive (without using a cheater on it) in the middle of a job one evening. Pissed me off since sears was too far and closed. I went to Vatozone, picked up a 10" Great Neck 1/2" drive (cheap) and still have it in my tool collection. It has held up great and been abused.

I am quite sure a Great Neck is not "the best ratchet ever made in history" :D, but it doesn't cost $200 either.

A long time ago I discovered that while Craftsman sockets are acceptable....their ratchets are crap.

I threw away all of my Craftsman ratchets and replaced them with Snap-On... the combination of a quality ratchet mixed with a reasonably-priced set of sockets is a good compromise for me.... and I love the solid, precise feel of the Snap-On ratchets. I bought a couple of the 3/8" versions, and spent a fair amount of money for one 1/2" drive version and I'm pretty much set for life now.

I used to think a ratchet is a ratchet. Survived on Craftsman ratchets for a long time. I don't work on cars for a living anymore so it wasn't that important to me. One day the Snap On guy came in with a deal on a couple ratchets..... WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE vs the Craftsman, even the "really good" ones. So, over the last 8 years or so, I've been buying new Snap On ratchets to replace my old stuff. Pretty much done with the conversion now, hadn't had the need to buy one in a while. I had already bought Snap On sockets years ago while I was still working on cars, they had proven their worth to me a looooong time ago over cheap stuff.

I don't know what "series" to look for. Personally, I like the standard chrome handle jobs for most situations. I've got flex heads, straight heads, long handles, short handles. But my favorites are the ones I bought in the "fine tooth" design. So nice to work with.

I believe you can buy directly from Snap On online. Or find a local tool truck franchise to buy from. I'm lucky enough to have a Snap On tool truck show up at work once a week. I also have a MAC (another decent brand) tool truck guy at the end of my street I can stop in and buy stuff when he's home.

My Craftsman ratchets from the 70's worked well for 20+ years, after they finally started skipping or I busted them,I was very dissapointed with the free replacements Sears gave me--they were junk, skipped from day one,and had plastic levers to switch from forward to reverse, which snapped like glass when they touched anything while using the ratchet...

I suspect the ones I was given were not "new",but someone elses junk trade in's they put a repair kit in--they were in a drawer under the cash register, not on the shelf..one time Sears gave me a hard time when I wanted my 1/2" ratchet replaced--the clerk says "we cant exchange the entire thing unless the handle is broken"..I said "OK--I'll be BACK!"...

I went home and put it in my vise and smashed it with a 20 lb sledge until it snapped, and I returned with all the peices..the clerks face was :eek1:,but he gave me a replacemnt--when he tried giving me one from the "return" drawer,I said "OH NO you dont--I want a NEW one,not one of those "rebuilt" POS ones..of course they didn't have the same one on the shelf,so I opted to take the next better one that had a finer tooth count and a polished handle, which has held up OK so far...

I wont buy Craftsman ratchets any more, they are china crap...since K-mart and Ace Hardware started selling Craftsman tools,I have seen them being sold new at flea markets, and now Sears is balking at replacing them "free" unless you have a sales slip, because anyone can buy one for a buck anywhere at a yard sale, etc, and trade them in for new ones..(I once bought a Craftsman 1-7/16" socket to tighten my transfer case yoke nut one for 3 bucks at a flea market--I noticed it was cracked though, but the seller said "SO?..just stop at Sears and get a new one free!..I did just that, but that was 10+ years ago..

I have bought a few Lowe's "Cobalt" ratchets and they seemed to be a lot better ,but I noticed since that purchase that theirs no longer look the same,or are as beefy, and are likely china made...Husky from Home Depot wasn't bad either ,but I dont know what they are like now either..

I'd be leery of Snap-On ,my friend buys a lot from them and he's been zinged a few times ,some of their tools are also imported ,from china, tiwan,so just because it says "Snap-On" doesn't mean its a good tool...I find their prices ridiculously high,at least for a guy like me who does not use his tools often enough or rely on them to make a living...I will buy up any cheap Snap-On stuff I see at yard sales or flea markets though..

My friend has a tool box full of broken Cornwell and Mack tools and cant get the guy who has the truck route to stop at his shop any more, after a few squabbles about warranty repairs or replacements..(He had to give the tools to another mechanic who still deals with the guy to get them replaced or fixed)..those 2 brands are better quality than department store or home center tools, but the prices are at least double too...

Other brands that were good were Blackhawk,Proto,Bonney,Wright, and S-K..they are all probably out of bussiness now though, but used ones are a bargain often...we sold S-K and K-D and "Easco" tools at the parts stores ,but when S-K started to balk at honoring their warranty their sales dropped off as customers were turned off,and last I knew they went chapter 11..

K-D,Easco,and Craftsman sockets and ratchets used to all be made at the same place in Worcester Ma back in the day...after they moved production overseas, their quality went downhill fast...Sears combination wrenches and flare wrenches are still decent quality, but I will only buy used ones now,the older ones were made better IMO..

I've seen the Great Neck and Stanley ratchets in stores, have yet to own one,but they do look like decent quality compared to some of the other junk sold at other stores...

This . Snap-On best money spent. Mine is used and abused every day with no problems. I have the flex head version also, but I have to replace the lock for the flex once every 6months or so.

craftsmen is now owned by k-mart and there warranty/quality has suffered severely.

diesel: Snap-on makes a bluepoint line thats overseas produced/cheaper. never personally had issue with warranty or quality
I have had other companys (MAC, MACO, Cornwell) loos a rep in the area and its a PITA trying to get stuff warrantied.

Last 1/4 inch ratchet I bought was Snap-on bought off ebay. It was $25 or $30. Paid $40-50 for my long handled Snap-on 1/2 drive off the ebay. I have a long hanled, fine tooth, round head that flips 180° 3/8ths Snap-on. $120 ratchet, I bought it used off the Snap-on truck for $60. I cracked the head five minutes later, dealer warrantied it and handed me a brand new one.

I'm a firm believer in Snap-on. Reasonable prices on ebay. I have a long handled flex head craftsman, I'm happy with that. But its no Snap-on...

So if you buy snap-on from ebay, is it warrantied? And if so, how would you make the claim?

I've always wanted to stop by and knock on his door...

I have the the Duralast brand from Autozone... I have not had any problems out of them... I use the Duralast 1/4 in drive over the Snap-on one i have..

They kinda look like Snap-on.. Plus they only about 20 bucks each..

I agree, surprisingly Duralast tools have done well for me. The feel and strength are superior to Crapsman.

Sears is barely hanging holding on as a department store and made some very poor brand decisions back in the '90s and screwed over a lot of little guys while the quality of their tools has dropped. Has anyone bought anything from Sears lately? They are still using 1980s era IBM cash registers pared with iPhones. Its the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

Believe it or not, I have bought Chinafreight\ Pittsburgh stuff and abused the hell out of them, no problems. I was skeptical, "its Chinese and not worth anything" but they have lasted through everything that I have put them through.

Just my 2¢.

I was suprised at the number of snap on tools (blue point) they have out now. I was told by a snap on rep that the ratchet repair kits are starting to come from taiwan or china. To me that is the same as having the whole ratchet made in some foreign land as that is the most important part. I will just keep buying old craftsman and snap on tools on Cl and ebay. That seems to be the only way you get anything made in america anymore.

Going into sears drives me nuts now.

Only awesome thing they are doing is paperless receipts. EVERY store, including safeway, with a loyalty program should to paperless receipts.

That being said, you guys suck. I was plenty happy with my crapsman ratchets, and now, I'm browsing ebay for snappy stuff. Another $100 i don't need to spend....

technically no. but if you have a good relation with your rep they will take care of it. if you have to mail in your stuff you just dont tell them you bought it used.

I've seen quite a few random people off the street walk onto a tool truck, get stuff guaranteed and never get asked one question. That goes for Snap-On, Mac, Matco.

The warranty may not technically apply to anyone but the original owner, but they shouldn't really need to verify when you bought it.

Same with sears. What good is a "no questions asked warranty" if you need to provide a purchase receipt?

as to snappy warranty stuff.. be aware that Snappy dealers are not particularly fond of some stranger just coming up to their truck and trying to get stuff warrantied.. it does nothing for the snappy guy and is a pain for him... will he do it? probably, but he wont be happy about it...

now, if you have a weekly truck stopping at your job, a running account? absolutely not an issue 99% of the time.. I used to buy eghey stuff and my guy would take care of me.. but your also a good customer, not joe blow off the street...

and yeah, snappy ratchets rule.. hands down, no question about it.. any pro wrencher knows it.. back in my 20's I blew up 6 3/8 crapsmans in one yr... and that's back in the day when they actually wherer reasonable quality.... I don't have the time in my life to go warranty that sh*t out...

that said, for every day beater ones in my rigging bags, I buy the blue points with quick release off eghey... you can get 1/4 for $20, and 3/8 for 25 to 30 all day long... not quite as nice as regular snappy's that I have here at the house, but damn good ratchets..

Switching all my ratchets to Snappy's, because POS Craftsman ratchets are HEAVY.
(....and, peices of sh*t.)

I had (2) 1/4", and (1) 3/8" ratchet explode, in the last 6 months.
Amost broke my gawdamn finger, with the 3/8"....
