Surprise surprise, the Harbor Freight racks don’t hold sockets. I’m heartbroken because I spent a whole .99 cents each.

I’m looking for metal racks that I can cut down to socket count, none of the plastic unmodifiable type.

Tried and true brand suggestions?

I have some old school magnetic socket holders. You can also stick them to anything when you need the whole rack with you.

I had originally gotten some rails like this way back from Craftsman but then I found them through Napa in the Carlyle tool line. I buy all my work socket sets with the rail. Pretty much all sets they sell can be had that way. You can also buy just the rails in different colors and lengths. Then you buy the clips and add as many as needed to the rails. They have the detent ball and hold sockets very well. They also line up nicely together in toolbox drawers.

I like these, can you modify the length also or just the clip quantity.

I like those plastic ones too. I found some on amazon that were shorter. They were a few different lengths available.

I had those plastic ones when hey first came out. Tossed Them all. I got tired of them falling over.

I had the opposite issue yesterday, the harbor freight plastic ones would not let go of the socket until the plastic clips broke completely off.

I use similar style as well. I don’t understand the “clip” in style holders unless you’re carrying the socket sets around with you.
I like the rail for when I don't know what socket size I need. It's easier to crawl under the truck with the entire rail.

I have all of my sets laying on their side, no particular reason why but I’ve never liked sockets standing up. I’ll see if I can find the shorter sticks @mrk5 mentioned.

I need mine standing in my box because I am out of room.

This is what I do. Mine have a handle to carry them with.

I’d rather have upright socket organization with socket sizes identified at a glance with the markings on the organizer. I had those metal racks for years, I don’t miss them one bit.
