Need to do this and before I end up shooting my self in the foot doing things the hard way, Figured I'd see which way I should go about it. All I really need is the 205 out so I can swap the rear output. So how much of the whole drivetrain to I need to pull. Do I need to pull everything from the tranny back or can I get away with just the 203/205. whats the easiest thing for removal and easiest when I go to put it back in?

I think it'd be easiest to drop the 203 and 205 together. The bolting up of those two pieces is usually very tight even on the ground.

I dunno about how it all balances with an auto, but my NV4500/203/205 balances nicely at the rear output of the tranny so I was able to use an engine hoist through the tranny tunnel. i assembled the three parts under the truck and then hoisted it into place. I removed it the same way.

I used the engine hoist method when I put it in the first time too. Now there's a cage/console area in the way and the trans tunnel doesn't come off anymore. So I have to drop and raise from the underside now.

So you have cage in the engine bay correct? Is it removable in a section? If not I would cut and make it suce. Makes a HUGE difference in things like this. I'm planning that in the engine bay. Same with the trans tunnel, kept it accessable & removable to access the shifter linkage.

I can access the shifter linkage. that plate on the console is removable. I just can't take out the original trans tunnel anymore. the engine bay doesn't have a cross bar in it yet. But there is a plan for. And yeah I'll probably end up using a tube clamp setup to make that removable.

I did notice though while trying to plan out getting this doubler out. that because of the tight fit of the exhaust. That I think I have to take out the exhaust to get the tranny out. whoops never noticed that until the other day.

Ahh, ok cool. As long as you can access the linkage. Not a big deal on the trans tunnel I guess. Exhause is another item I'm making come out in a section. Easy to do with all the different types of exhaust flange clamp setups available these days. And good ones too that seal up and wont leak. I HATE a leaky exhaust.

to swap out the tail shaft you dont need to pull the tcase.

slow and steady will win this race in the truck.

I just installed a 205 in my truck the old fashion way, picked it up and slid it on!!!

But what Brett (Sweetk30) you don't need to pull the case just to change the shaft.

I know I don't have to I asked about that in another thread. But then I heard needle bearings, and figured I'd better be ready to pull it anyways:haha:

the needle bearings are a pain for sure.just gota use some grease to keep them in place and slide the ouput back in.easies way in your case t get it in and out if you cant get the needle bearings to hold in palce is gonna be a trans jack or similar.i used a broken office chair once.the kind with a hydraulic up and down lever.just push up the lever and lift the seat desired height and release the lever and it stayed up good enuf to roll the trans case back int place.redneck i know, but it worked.haha.
