So what is the best wheel size to get for large tires (37-40") these days, from what ive read 16s are no good because they dont have a safety ring or something and 16.5s arent made by many companies before. Are 15s a viable option still? I have a d44/14bff with disks in the rear, will 15s cause fitment issues?

Im looking on craigslist for tires and just wanna know what i should be looking for, to get into a wheel size that i will be able to find tires for in the future when i need them...

only 16.5 has no safty bead. basicly any tire size in xx.5 has no safty bead on rim .

i my self like 10 wide in tires that big.

15 or 17 are the only ones to bother with anymore. 15s will fit fine and for the time being are cheaper. 17s are getting pretty comparable in price to 15s, and I am confident you will see them being cheaper within the next 10 years if not the next few.

16s were pretty common in the 90s for light truck tires. A lot of AG tires are 16.1s, which are just a 16 with no safety bead (they mount on a regular 16" rim fine). 16.5s are really only around in the 40"+ market, and that's quickly falling away. They were what you needed to clear a 1 ton caliper, so a lot of bigger tires got made in that size. There's still a little support for them in the offroad market due to the availability of H1 double beadlocks, but unless you can do cheap/free shipping, those wheels are really no cheaper than a cheap set of single beadlocks, especially when you consider that the H1s will still need a rock ring or rebar something.

16s are still great for anything up to 37s. Honestly just go to 17s. The 15in market is beginning to fall off and 16s will probably behind them in the next few years.

It's funny you mention that. My brother in law has a '00 2500 Dodge with the factory chrome wheels on it. His tire went flat in my driveway and the tire came off the bead... turns out the wheel (16") doesn't have a safety bead.

You should change that to most. A lot of OEM GM 16.5" wheels have a safety bead.

As for the original question. Whichever size you can find a good deal on tires.

17" look at available tire sizes. If you are looking at a mild mud terrian like a BFG or Goodyear, you can't get anything bigger than a 35 unless its a 17" rim.

16s are mostly metric sized it seems.

Although if you are sticking with swampers or Pit Bulls then get whatever size rim you find the cheapest price on.

sounds good guys, thanks for all the help. 15s seem pretty popular on craigslist but ive seen a few 17s as well...ill keep my eye out

It also depends on the load rating you're looking for. Most 15 inch tires are C rated, most D and E tires seem to be 17 or higher these days.

17 s are pretty much the norm on a lot of stock trucks which means big aftermarket tires are gonna stay in that range. I can't hardly find any advertised tires on 16.5 rims much snymore except the bigger over 37s. I'm going to keep using military takeoffs for mine as long as they are offered. Then probly go
Up to a 17 inch rim for availability of tires.
