looking at a 2010 Tahoe. Is there better years than others? Years to watch out for?

Intended use and expectations would help narrow down an answer for you.

Never owned a recent one, but someone I trust told me to buy 99-06 when I was last looking a coupe of years ago. I’m not entirely sure what the issues were after that period.

I'd look for one with the 6L80. I dont have a tahoe, but I'm not overly impressed with my 5.3/4L60E, with 3.42s. Seems like it's either lugging, or wound up. I also drive more aggressively than most at times, so that may be part of it.

Likely because of your gearing. My Tahoe has 4.10's from the factory, works very well.

What year? After I bought mine I learned some of the 06 Z71s came with 4.10s, but they were very few compared the the 3.42 trucks. I haven't looked really closely into it, but was under the impression that with the 6 speed they kept the shitty axle gears, but had much better, and lower transmission gearing offsetting it.

2002 Z71. Most were 3.73 but some were 4.10.

I'm rocking an 09 Tahoe Hybrid right now as a DD. I absolutely love the truck. It's super comfy, quiet and has tons of power. 6.0L / 2 mode hybrid / 4wd. The truck has coils on all 4 corners with IFS up front and a multi link out back.

It should be fairly close running gear with the 2010 silverado I have. The only thing that I have gone wrong is the fuel pump and the stereo. I love the 5.3 and 6 speed. I think the gearing could be better in the axles but for normal driving on 33s it is comfy and has decent fuel mileage. I get 15 average with around 20 highway long trips.

Does the hybrid feature add to the experience, or is it just extra dead weight?

It is definitely a different kind of a drive than a regular transmission is. But it doesn't feel like a dead slushbox like most CVTs do. It's an EVT (electronically variable transmission) that has 4 regular gears as well. It shifts through them but maintains the engine RPM for peak efficiency or power depending on how you drive it. It goes like a bat outta hell when you romp on it with the 6.0L plus both electric motors givin'r.

It gets substantially better fuel economy than any other 6.0L powered vehicle I've owned. It is more or less on par with my Duramax trucks when cruising on the highway and fully kicks their ass with city driving when the engine is only running 2/3 of the time and is running on electric assist most of the rest of the time. It has an itty bitty little fuel tank for weight savings, so I gotta fill up more often but my overall consumption is less and gasoline is far cheaper than diesel around here.
