found this on my axle, thought the previous owner mickey moused this, but went to oreillys and discovered this is actually oem..... I know it's "engineered" but I don't like it. Is there any better axle nut retainers out there? older years? aftermarket?

That is a far superior method than the previous two nuts with the pinhole washer or locking tab washer.

I've had a 14BFF like that and it didn't want to clock at the point where the recommended torque spec was supposed to be. Had to be way loose or super tight.

I'm having that problem here, on bigger trucks that I have worked on in the past, I would always torque the nut down pretty tight to make sure the races were seated, then I would back it off and go basically hand tight so there would be zero play or lash. I was checking this out http://www.stage8.com/offroad.html

but I was hoping to find something like they have on the bigger trucks where the nut has a bunch of tapped holes and then the grove washer has multiple holes too, you would line up the two and then put in a smaller bolt to lock them together

this is kind of what I was looking for, this is for a Toyota front axle though..... Kert, you should make these for 14 bolts...

Just note that their D60 nut set, which talks obliquely about fitting the 14BFF ... doesn't fit. I tried it.

Their web page lists the dimension, but you need a ton of clearance *inside* the hub and all of the 14 bolt hubs I have are nowhere near enough.

Which is a shame as the front axle ones are sweet.

So, yeah, you'll hafta do something custom or clever. Keep us posted as to progress, as I'd like a better solution too.

years of working in shops and redoing rear brakes / seals and other stuff with this style I have not had 1 fail yet .

My 14ff uses this retention method and I love it. Never had a problem with it.
