I just installed this yesterday. After it got up to temp after initial installation I noticed a small leak in a prestone flush valve on the heater hose, I shut it down and replaced it tonight. Again fired it up and brought it up to temp. Once nice and warm I checked for leaks, no leaks. Jumped back in the cab and gave it some gas before it even got to 1500 RPM's Boom :eek1: This is what I found

Was it a new pump or a reman? If you have the belt too tight this "could" happen but that fan spacer you have isn't doing you any good either.

this was a brand new pump not a reman judging by the spot of failure I was guessing a bad casting...the spacer probably isn't helping but a water pump should be able to withstand a whole lot more presure than that. And belts were tensioned correctly

in the defense of cardone, everyone makes mistakes.

sucks when someone elses mistake causes you problems though. that thing should have a lifetime warranty though, so the parts house should replace it for you.

yes it is a lifetime warranty and yes mistakes do happen but this isn't just a monetary concern but one of safety as well I'm glad I wasn't under the hood:crazy:

As for cost...my time is worth way more than a $37 water pump I will gladly...now...pay more for a higher quality one. There is also the cost of the coolant which isn't as cheap as it used to be as well as replacing possible damage that was caused during the failure...I was too pissed off to look into it farther than taking pictures. I have a call in to cardone I will report back if and when they call back.

Well, they should at the minimum cover the cost of a replacement pump, and coolant. Sometimes they will pay a labor claim of up to $50.00/hour but if you're doing the labor yourself they probably won't give any credit for your labor. Do you have any friends that own a shop that would write you up a labor claim to turn in if they ask for one?

That would be my expectations and yes I do:D

A few years ago, (1995), I bought a waterpump from Checkers and put it on my old 86 k-10 pickup. A week after I bought it, the damn bearings went out in it even though the belts were properly tensioned. It was under warranty and I replaced it with a new one and 3 days later, pump No.2 was leaking from the weep hole.

I haven't trusted Checkers, (O'Reilly's), since for any major parts.

I just received a call from a VP from Cardone, very apologetic and very eager to determine root cause of failure. They have seen pictures and have asked me to work closely with Checker to return this to them.

Thats great, thats really all they can do.

I would be pleased with that response.

Have they offered to pay for the coolant and your time? With the response you got from them if it were me i would be happy and not worry about a labor claim but i would insist they cover any monetary cost for parts.

I wonder about the temp probe being the cause of this.

Did it screw in far enough that it hit the casting on the inside and busted the front off of the pump?

That is a definate possibility.

It shouldn't be hard to look at the sender and see if there are any "witness" marks that it had run into the casting and possibly cracking it.
