My Build Blog

Ok, I'm not sure how this is gonna work, but the plan is to keep the discussion in this thread and the build details in my CK5 blog. So if you take a look at my blog and want to tell me I'm an idiot, or bug me for updates or even tell me I'm your hero (a guy can dream) - this is the place. I am going to take my sweet time with the build cause I still can't get money and time to grow on my trees yet. First up is the 14BFF. A link to my blog is in my sig. Enjoy.

Shaved and painted down there this weekend take a look.

I'm talking about an axle, what did you think I was talking about?

4.88s and Detroit installed in the 14BFF as well as the pinion support. Pics after I get it setup.

Now I've added a teaser pic....

I also managed to splash brake cleaner all over it when cleaning the diff, so now I have even more to touch up. Such is life.

Got me a D60 today..........

:pimp::pimp::pimp::pimp::pimp::pimp::pimp::pimp:

According to BillaVista's BOM decoder it is a '82-'87 K30 axle with the big 35 spline inners and a 4.10 diff. Also has Superwinch hubs, a very beefy tie rod and crossover reverse high steer arms. Pics as soon as we get daylight and no rain at the same time.

wowwwwwwww with the 14 ff rear you had to move the mounts correct? i am going to have the place where i'm buying mine (extreme axle sales) move and weld it since i can't weld strong enough beads...do you have measurements? did you add a few degrees to it to accomidate driveline angles and everything?

The 14BFF is from a C20 so the spring perches are the same as the 10 bolt was, so I didn't do anything with them. The one ton 14BFF's will have a couple inches narrower spring pad spacing and will need to be moved. However since the axle was from a 2WD truck, the lower shock mounts were different, so I cut them off. I have new mounts from Ruff Stuff that I'll get welded on once I can drive the truck someplace where there is a welder. 14 Bolt axles from a 4WD truck should bolt right up with an adapter u-joint. You may also need to change brake lines and e-brake cables. I'm swapping to rear discs, so I'll need new brake lines and won't have an e-brake anymore ('till I can get one for the t-case).

very nice job!, I allmost have the setup, 14FF/D60, 4:88's, Detroit in the 14bolt. I have a RuffStuff dif cover for my D60 but a Crane cover on my 14bolt. still need a locker for the front axle. Im waiting for my AlloyUSA 35 spline Cromoly axle set for my 60 to show up in the mail.

I still need to get the D60 re-geared, and I'll leave it open for now. I'm thinking I'll go with one of Kert's diff covers for the front and have him add a mounting spot for hydro assist (planning for the future). I'll also need to go to crossover steering before I put in the D60, but I think I'll get a different steering arm for the passenger side and run the tie rod in the stock location. Someday waaaaay in the future, I'd like to go with chromoly front shafts with 35 spline outers and an ARB. Too much else on the list now though.

i wish i had the guts to try all that axle swapping. The idea doesn't sound hard, but ya'll make it sound very confusing.

It sounded confusing to me at first too. Just read up on it and look at other people's build threads and questions/answers. I spend probly 4x as much time on CK5 reading up on tech as I do turning wrenches. Of course, now I have projects lined up for the next 5 years on my blazer. :haha:

I have been collecting parts for a few years now, and fabbing things too. I cant leave ANYTHING alone. EVERY aftermarket piece I get has to be modified in some way. I always take my 90 deg right angle air grinder and debur and break ALL sharp edges on any piece I buy. If it has bolt holes for mounting and the holes dont have a clean chamfer on the edges I chamfer both sides of the holes on every hole. I knock off all the weld dingle bearies off too.

Part of the reason is if I powdercoat parts you get better coverage on the edges if their radiused vs a square sharp edge. That sharp edge wont get any real coverage and will statr to rust. If its got a good radius it will get fully coated, that goes for just rattle canning it too. I just like clean looking stuff. If I sold diff covers, or whatever I would take the time to debur everything before it went out my door. Attention to detail is everything, its the machinist in me I guess.

Not exactly photographic proof that it is running, but there is a new pic in the first post.

Coming somewhat soon, pics of it in the dirt. :D

There are also a bunch of pics in my blog, and more upgrades in the works.......
