Lent my 1987 3/4t 454BB Suburban to my son and his friends to do a junkyard run...
Now I have a dead suburban on my drive...
Looks like the water pump siezed, the stress of that bent the flange on the pump, and took out the radiator, fan, fan clutch, belts...
The belts shredded, and chopped off the Altenator to batt wire, welded the alt end of the wire to the bracket....
Its a mess!
To be honest, I had recently replaced the waterpump and fan clutch... and I noticed a vibration that was not there before then... It was on my TODO list, but just drove it steady... He said he was doing 80 when it went bang! Maybe the fan clutch was bad...

Ok, so I need a new radiator but am unsure whats best... aluminum? how many passes?
Looking for a stock type fan is confusing too... whats the best?
Any advice, apart from never lending it to a kid would help please!

Depending on what it's used for and how hard you are going to work it, is how you should order parts. You can make things easy on yourself, visit www.Rockauto.com and pick out what you need. Have them ship it to you and put it all back together again. Simple, gates belts and any hoses you need. Whatever 4 row radiator they have, I have one and seems to work fine so far. Hayden fan and clutch. But get Jegs or Summit special water pump, their brand is prolly good enough.

Unless you want the all aluminum rad and cool pump or fan or etc, then start looking at Summit.

Ok, got the 4 row HD radiator from RockAuto.. all good.
Not so good was the fan blade they sent me... Listing was right, but when I began to strip the mess I find that I have a 7 blade fan, and the one they sent me is a 5 blade.
Called them and they say its correct, and will work, and they dont have a 7 blade and cant get one.
Is the 5 ok, or the 7 better?
After searching lots, I cant even find the 7 blade!
Thoughts/opinions?

5 will be fine, it's what's on mine as well, as long as you have a good cooling system, like it sounds like you are in the process of getting, it will work just fine :D

4 row radiator, 195 t-stat, heavy duty fan clutch and a 5 blade factory fan, and mine runs right at and sometimes slightly under t-stat reading all day long

the 7 blade may have been used on the suburbans with dual ac. my 88 burban had a 7 blade on it and it was a dual ac.

He said he was doing 80 when it went bang!

There's your problem right there! The joy's of being young!!
