So, driving down the highway, down the exit ramp, stop and wait for traffic to clear to make a left. Just start to get going, easy on the throttle, not in any rush here, maybe 20' out BANG!!! Shook the whole truck.

My first thought was that the rear end just exploded all over the road. Yet, I was still rolling. Figuring, if something was broken, stepping on the gas to get out of the road wouldn't do any more harm. Stepped on the gas and the truck accelerated like normal, no noises, no wobbling, both rear tires still under the fenders.

Trans shifts to 2nd, still going, 3rd, still going, off the gas and slides into 4th. Check the mirrors, no oil trail, no parts in the road. Pull into the first parking lot, crawl under and around, no signs of anything wrong, no leaking, no smoking, nothing is overly hot. So, I went into the store, grabbed a 12 pack and continued along my way.

Next day, jack up the rear, spin tires by hand. Nothing abnormal, can hear the lockright clicking away, that's it. Start it up, put trans in 1 and let off the brake. Rear tires start spinning away, no noises, no nothing.

Been driving it for a week now since this happened. No noises, no issues. This has been bugging me. Rig specs are below. Anyone have any clue as to what happened?

It may have been the splines on your driveshaft are in need of lube.or are getting worn and that will let the slip yoke not slide --when you stop the slip yoke slides out and needs to retract once you let off the brakes and take off...usually it will thump once just as you come to a stop, but sometimes it waits until it starts moving to do it..

Could be the locking diff clurch is binding up too,a posi additive may help prevent that...something could have broke and you may not know it until later too--I once had a "log" from a rear wheel bearing get crunched up in the ring and pinion on a truck once--one bang, then no noises at all--when I went to look after removing the diff cover i found a chink missing from the ring gear on one tooth, and peices of the shattered baring roller in the lube...

Detroit locker? If so they can be pretty loud and shake the truck when the lock up (especially after a coasting turn).

Not a clutch type, no additive would change the lockers operation.

It is a lock right so, similar in operation to a detroit? :dunno: I've just never felt that kind of a bang in a normal driving situation. Driving in the demo derby you hear all kinds of noises so nothing spooks me any more. But it does make me wonder what happened.

Anyone else agree maybe it was just the locker? Any other ideas?

Its normal. it was just the locker. Ive got a lock rite. Itll do that too. First time It happened I about sh!t my pants and was waiting to see the axle walk out of the housing. They just get in a bind sometimes and eventually "release" and you get the bang.

It may have been the lockrite locking and unlocking they can occasionally be super loud. I would check though you may have a broken pin in the lock rite

My detroit will do that when the roads are wet during slight turns. Its pretty violent locking 42 inch tires.

my guess would also be ur locker. i no u said u had a loc-right but my detroit has done some incredibly loud bangs doing the samething u did. one time my top was off (the trucks top, sorry guys) and about 20ft into an intersection going straight it sounded and felt like a gun going off under my floor. scared the crap out of everyone, including myself. but it was all wheelers in the seats so we knew what it was and just laughed about how loud it was and scared the crap out of all of us:haha: its odd that a loc-right would do it that much. i havent heard of a loc right being loud like that.

For grins I'd pull the rear diff cover and have a look. I had a carrier split in half once with a lock right in it and it would do this. Under load the carier would split open and let the teeth on the lock right slip. It held together enough for the truck to be driveable for a while.

Turns out I drove it that way too long and ended up ramping the teeth on the lock right and ruining it too. Just a thought.

I probably will take the cover off and inspect everything. I know these 14bsf axles are strong but I was expecting one of the tires to come rolling out the side with the drum and axle shaft with it.

Pretty sure the carrier isn't split... yet. I still get the chirping tires under heavy accel and tight turning. Left and right. Can't really afford for this thing to break right now and trying to avoid putting the old Volvo 240 on the road. Trying to sell that, not drive it.

If it is broken and its just a pin, they are like 20 bucks from lock rite. That is the weakest part of that locker, I tell everyone to just get a spare set and carry them around with em.

It really sounds like if anything is broke that is what it will be, the locker will funtion normal most of the time but there are times when it won't work at all if you have a broken pin

Most likely the locker. But, if you have the slip joint in the driveshaft, it can make you think you were hit by a truck.
Grease will make it go away for a while, but eventually it will come back, and not leave.

Maybe you got rear-ended by a smart car or ford fiesta or the like and you just didnt realize it. :doah::dunno:
