Figured I would document my motor mount joys so maybe somebody else could save some time and headache.
So, a few years a ago I dropped a 454 in my rig as I blew up the old 400. As most of you know, you just use the small block mounts and everything bolts up and away you go.
However, with the power that I am running, I could tear out the stock mounts with one hit of the throttle. I went on a run, unloaded from the trailer, romped on it and the mounts were done that fast to the point that the lower belt pulley would rub my ORD steering brace.
So then I tried those poly inserts that go into the stock mount housing. Those actually worked good for a few years surviving lots of throttle and some really hard hits.
In fact here is a video of one of those in a local competition two years back. I'm the second to last rig. Apparently when in doubt, floor it doesnt always work!

Anyway, a few weeks ago I went on a local snow run and I was giving it hell with the 44's I run now. We went miles up this mountain road in some snowy powder that got over 5 feet deep in some places.
Miles and miles up this canyon, the poly mounts failed. They failed good enough that the front pulley hit the steering brace hard enough that it ripped that off and messing that up along with the harmonic balancer.
To recover it, we stripped it all off, pulled the ram assist and I got to strong arm it down the canyon on the end of a tow rope.
Now since I have a plasma and a welder, I'm going to build my own mounts much like the ORD competition ones as they look like even if the poly failed, it would not drop down enough to cause the same damage.
So, I guess what I'm saying is, if you are killing the stock mounts, the poly inserts may only buy you more time. I would have been money ahead to buy the ORD ones years back I think.
