Looking to replace the exhaust on my '88 K-5 and am torn between ideas.

The "hot rodder" in me was thinking of a conventional 2.5" dual exhaust bolted to the factory exhaust manifolds. Headers would be considered in the future....
On the other hand, there's alot of oppinion that a single 3" exhaust is the way to go (less expense, less "stuff" to get hung up on off-road, etc...). And the claim is that low & mid-range performance is equal to (or possably better than) 2.5" duals......

So.....anyone with experience running both?

I'm assuming yours is a TBI setup, go to tbichips.com he's got a whole section about what works an what doesn't, and they've dyno'd a bunch of them to prove it. I have a 3" catback from flowmaster, and I love it. Took me longer to cut the old stock setup off than to put the new one on. Plus it fit perfectly, and it's held up well for me, I've had it for about 5 years+\-. Next up for me is a high flow cat...

Yeap...... 350 TBI here.

I've been eyeing the Flowmaster setup for a while now. Back in my "hot rodding" days, I swore by Flowmaster and their products......always been happy with 'em.
Which muffler is included in their cat-back kit?

what have you gents done with the Y pipe? does anyone make a performance "bolt on Y" that uses the stock manifold? i'm definetely going with a single 3" system.

smier...do you have the part number available for the setup you used? thanks, Bill

I want to say a 50 series comes with the cat back setup... Summit sells it pretty cheap. A few guys have complained that this setup has rusted on them, but mine has held up really well, but I do wash my truck a lot, especially after the snow flies. I would order it again, but next time I want the 40 series muffler, it should be a touch louder. She's got a nice rumble when you get on it, but barely noticable at idle.

I voted for single exhaust.

I've always had duals w/ Flowmasters in the past but I'm tired of the clutter underneath, especially around the t-case. My current build is going to get big single exhaust and I'm going to make sure the shop keeps it nice, clean and out of the way this time. Probably going with a more mellow sound Magnaflow muffler as well.

I'm getting old. :doah:

"I'm getting old" as well, mines almost ready for paint, and my son(7) says I should paint it like a monster truck... The thought that popped into my head was "Boy, that'd really piss off the neighborhood..."

I'm not sure of the part #, but I know it's specifically listed for our trucks in the new summit catalog.

i may be getting old, but i feel older :D i'll be happy with a slight but mellow growl....mebe that's a 50 series.

i'll go check the new Summit catalog............thanks.
i think i read that flowmaster makes a collector, but i need to see if anyony makes a bolt on y pipe too.

I'm doing single on my tbi... long tubes into a 2.5" Y-pipe, 3" hi-flow cat and a 50 series flow...

I just had 2.5 dual Magnaflows put on . Nice & quiet at idle. Steady rumble at cruise. Loud as hell under hard skinny pedal. Loud enough that I might change to quieter mufflers. If its too loud your too old. I must be too old!

flowmaster = http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FLO-Y250300/

custom made pipe to fit this y-pipe collector.

if flow master min 50 series muffler for lot less noise inside the cabin area.

good free flow cat 3" in/out also if you love the earth or want to keep the law happy.

then do a 3 wire o2 sensor swap for faster working time and better positioning in the exaust

That's odd. The last flowmaster exhaust system I installed (a "Force II" system on an Olds 442) was made from aluminised steel. When I sold the car after 8 years, the pipes and mufflers looked like I had installed them the week before! (except for the standard steel clamps I used...which looked like $hit! LOL  ).

Are they not made from aluminised steel anymore??? :dunno:
