In my garage
Russel came over today so we could chase down the key-off draw my truck has had for a long time. Went and bought a 925 CC battery for it, and Russel worked his magic. Narrowed it down to in the cab of the truck, then found where I had my "tach hot" plugged in was the issue. My bad Russel... :doah:

Fixed that issue, plugged everything back in, put the dash back together and actually fired it up for the first time in 18 months.

Then I sold Russel my NV4500 (and hydro bell)with NWF 203/205 doubler (32 spline throughout, 1410's, plenty of billet, thriple stick shifters and crossmember/skid)for a deal he couldn't say no to.

Good day, but I'm am thoroughly frozen now. High temp while he was here was 0 F. It was OK inside the garage with the torpedo heater going...not so much when the door was open and we were loading the doubler. :haha:

At least the doubler is going to someone who will put it to good use!

Sounds like you had a productive day Rene...and made a sale too...glad you figured out your electrical troubles...

Better than my day--my truck refused to fire up,it has been about 5 degrees here the past few nights and maybe 20 at noon, got up to 35 degrees today in the sun--but the batteries couldn't spin the old 6.2 over fast enough and long enough with 15W-40 in it..I waited till 3 pm so the garage would be about 40 degrees, but it killed the batteries after "almost" firing up a few times..

I would have plugged in my block heater, but I think all it does is warm the heater hoses up,and waste electricity...

I even tried jumping it with a third fully charged battery, but no dice--the 2 drained ones just soaked up the amps I guess...

I have all 3 of them charging now,I put both of my 10 amp chargers on them, and will leave them on overnight...hoping it'll start tomorrow so I can go get some fuel in it--more snow coming tomorrow night into monday here--3-8" ,maybe more...getting tired of this sh***y weather and the cold!...already burnt 20 gallons of heating oil since the last delivery 2 weeks ago too...

Hoping this winter from hell lets up soon,so I can start fixing things on the truck--sick of patching things up half-arsed to "get by" and having to trust it that way ..this week looks to be just as cold as the last one unfortunately..

Yeah, the cold can fuvk off now...been a really long cold snap here. Gonna hit -30 F here tonight without the wind. with the wind should well into the -40's. Don't have anywhere to go tomorrow, which is good cuz I don't think my car will start. It has started at -25 F, but barely and had to be re-started twice before it'd stay running. Shoulda put synthetic oil in it a few months back. It also doesn't have a block heater, or battery blanket.

My neighbor did get his flat deck tow truck with a 6.5 started today...I was amazed. Didn't sound happy though. :haha:

I can imagine his 6.5 sounds loud after a frigid start..

...if and when my 6.2 starts when its below 20f out--it sounds like a stonecrusher for a good 5 minutes,I swear you can hear every lifter and piston flopping around inside ,and I always cringe until it warms up and finally quiets down some...

One friend said "it sounds like it spun a bearing!--you TRUST that thing?."..:eek1:
I said "How can you tell,it always sounds like that!"..
I guess the only real way to tell if a 6.2 has a spun bearing is when the crank snaps, or refuses to rotate any more..:doah:

If I had driven my truck this week,it probably would have fired up--but I let it sit in the garage since last saturday, and only went 10 miles with it too--my sister has been visiting for the past week or so,and we used her car,and it didn't snow enough to bother using the truck to plow...7 nights of near zero chill was too much for it...

I was lucky the master cylinder didn't lose all the fluid in the rear chamber,I have to fill it every week, the oil pan is still leaking too--but lately its so cold, its hardly lost any oil,its too thick to drip out!..that's about the only "advantage" to this frigging cold weather..

I think I'll be looking for 2 new or near new batteries this week...:(...and I noticed tires and batteries aren't the only things priced insanely now--you cant even buy a gallon of 50/50 pre-mix antifreeze here for less than 12 bucks now!.."real" antifreeze is almost 20!...nothing like gouging when you need the stuff most..

Funny, here the 50/50 mix is 50 cents cheaper than unmixed. Total scam!!

Battery was reasonable I thought. Bought one today, 925 CCA and 10 year warranty (4 years replacement, pro-rated the next 6 years) for $130.

You're most welcome Rene!

He had plugged his factory tach into a 12V battery port on the fuse block vs into an ignition port. The factory tach's plug had been modified so it would fit. Apparently the factory tach draws approx 90mA with key on and no ignition input...

I am not 100% sure what the doubler setup is gonna be used for yet... I have the same 203/205 assembly in the buggy so I may just keep it as a spare. The 5 speed is never a bad thing to have kicking around :P

I'm tempted to go buy a used 4D semi truck battery and put it in the truck bed under my tool box!...then I'll have some serious cranking amps...:D..
I might find a decent one free or cheap,I know a lot of fleet trucks get all the batteries replaced at once often, even if one or more has nothing wrong with it...

Batteries are at least 75 bucks here for the cheapest Walmart "Never-Start" or a "Valuecrap" at Autozone...I've checked around,Sears and most other parts stores want 125+ bucks for a "good" battery like a Die-Hard or Interstate, and I dont have 250 bucks to spend on batteries..

Local Interstate dealer has some "economy" black cased no label "specials" they sell used car dealers for about 50 bucks,(3 year pro rated warranty)...and I'm told they sometimes sell ones that got returned as "defects" but were OK,the customer ended up having charging system problems,it was not the battery at fault...but I've been burned before buying those "slightly used but tested "good" batteries"so I balk at buying those...--

I've had better luck buying ones out of wrecks at junkyards..trouble is nowadays many hatians go to the junkyards and buy up every tire and battery by the truckload,so the chances of getting a good one is not very good any more...any tires or batteries you do happen to find they want twice what they used to charge now too, used to get 10-20 for a tire, now its more like 30 to 50,and batteries are 30 to 50 with an old one exchanged...(junk ones bring about 10 bucks)..

that's gotta feel good, a little nagging issue for so long fixed! Awesomerest!

Seems its always something stupid that causes problems

This cold snap can eff off at any time, not much warmer here :doah:

It's hilarious how Rene was freezing cold and I honestly was quite comfortable... It's been considerably colder where I live pretty much the entire winter. It was -39 the night before and warmed up to -24 or so the next day. I was running around in a hoodie and honestly not cold at all, LOL! The inside of the garage was downright nice to work in compared to the crap I work in daily up here at home :P

I'm not very acclimatized fock-chop. Gotta remember when it gets cold when I'm working I reach up and turn up the heater :flipoff7:

Comfy in the garage for me is anything between 50F and 75F...not 25F.
