My front shaft was more because of the labor that the shop put into making the cv work at higher angles + 3 new u-joints. Your 73 has a spicer type front shaft and my 82 has a saginaw type front shaft so I don't know if your mods will be the same or if they are needed. If you go 9 inches in the front, shoot for 7 inches in the rear to make it sit level. Go with a swarbar disconnect system, these are the single best mod for ride quality. My steering is stock setup, with a Pro Comp 4 inch steering arm and a Skyjacker 2 inch Pitman arm, works good. My superlifts springs are heavy duty, pretty good flex and ride.
