@mrk5 , @Raggedy_Ann and I did a little snow wheeling the Saturday after thanksgiving. We attempted to run Jones Pass first, we only made it about half way up before the snow got to deep, the road to narrow and the drop off to steep. We ran back down loaded up and went to Bill Moore Lake trail, we managed to make the whole trail which ends at the lake. It was getting dark and we were about three quarters of the way up the trail, we were on a steep down hill section and had to make the call to ether keep going or turn around. We decided to keep pushing and it luckily paid off. A short distance after deciding to keep pushing I dropped into about a 5 foot deep snow drift and started to question the decision we made. Luckily I made short work of getting myself out and moving again. From there I held it to the floor till we made the end of the trail. The wind was miserable at the lake, we took a few minutes to take pics of each of us on poser rock, walked quickly to check out the lake and headed back. We had to drive our ass’s off to get backup the steep section we came down on the way in. After that it was all pretty much downhill and uneventful.

How do you know where the trail is in the treeless sections? Are there notable obstacles if you wander off?

On the first trail we were just following the rocks that are along the edge of the trail. We did have to stop and look a few times to make sure we were on the trail.

The consequences for driving off the trail above tree line can be dire because they are usually shelf roads. That's also what usually forces us to turn around.

Looks like you guys had a blast. The pics with the 3 trucks parked side by side are pretty awesome, especially the one with the trees in the background!
