black bucket type deal in gas tank.

so. today my fuel gauge quit working again, Pulled out the sending unit, my float fell off. lol. anyway got that back on, and then I noticed that black bucket looking deal thats usually in the center of the tank, is just floating around in my tank, It looks like it has a big crack on the bottom. and thats how it came loose..

so what do i do about that

Break it apart and remove it and make sure to get ALL of the pieces out. There is no way to install another or even reattach the current one.
 
what does that thing even do?

It keeps you from stalling the motor on turns and when driving off camber with low tank levels.

Some people have no problems, others say that under 1/4 tank it stalls easily.

You have the tank out, a replacement is probably under $200... (even if the aftermarket design isn't as good as factory)
