Looking for black hardware, much like black oxide, but it can't rust. I've used black oxide in areas that aren't seen and shortly after found them rusty.

Here's the kicker... I'm looking for a #8-#6 shank machine thread button head Allen. I can get them in SS easily but it's going against black which might make it look tacky. Also, it would stand out on the firewall and I don't want.

:dunno:

Is it something that you might be able to use black plastic buttons on?

I have seen black chrome very very shiny finish and I don't think very strong overall

That's what I was going to suggest, black chrome or black nickel. They should be just as hard and weather resistant as regular chrome/ nickel.

Any good sources? I've got a bitchin hardware store locally but that might be out of their wheelhouse.

Ask at your local store. I own a True Value store in Redondo Beach. We are supplied by Hillman fasteners and they have a full line of black chrome. Depending on your local stores supplier they should be able to get you what you're looking for.

My local store that I've turned to MANY times only carries black oxide. The True Value in Pasadena has a lot of stuff that the specialty hardware stores don't carry (as well as the larger Home Improvement stores) Obviously it is give an take for who carries what.

Having said that, I'll have to check them out again. Sometimes their business hours hurt them the most, at least business from me. :(
