hi i was reinstalling my steering wheel and noticed a groan when i turned
the wheel.. i checked the fluid level and i was at the top... the fluid is
black and about 10+ years old.. so is the pump about to take a dump
or do i just need to drain the fluid and start new? thanks...

Holy Christ yes you need to change the fluid. Actually you need to flush that system just draining it won't be good enough if.you have cooked the fluid black. Start there. And maybe the pump will come around, maybe not.

Yeah more like Maybe not.
Once it's cooked like this, it gums up inside the pump, you could rebuild it, but flushing it most of the times won't do much.

so i should put new pump and fluid on the list.. any recomendations??
how do i get the old fluid out of the steering gear.. thanks...

Well you want flush all of it out, I would let it bleed out first then put in some fluid run it thru, then empty it out.
Next if it were me I would flush it with brake fluid since it's not bad for seals, and then refill with new fluid, but for the pump, for the cost of rebuilts, I would change it to save myself the headaches.

Disco the return into a bucket. Plug hole in reservoir. Jack up front diff. Run unit, let old get pumped out, while someone keeps filling new. And saw the steering wheel lock to lock. Until its new fluid coming out the return. That will purge the steering box and all the lines. If its hydro assist, you better be on and off the brakes at the same time. And ill tell ya, flush with cheap ****. And fill with a good full.synthetic. I've gotten rid of pump groan in more than a couple 2nd gen cummins dodge trucks that way. It's the final.fill with good synth that is the key I think.

thanks for the tip... i will flush it out with the cheep stuff before i install
the pump....How many quarts do i need? should i put new lines on?

Might want to replace both P/S hoses at the same time,as the black fluid may be the carbon black washing off the inside lining of the original rubber hoses....dont want that clogging up your new pump,or the steering box..

i flushed out the sysrtem the fluid was black and some white and frothy..
i got a new pump and lines and royal purple fluid.... now to get the pully off:doah:

X2, its real easy with the right puller, huge pain without it.
Be sure you get a power steering pump puller, not a general purpose puller.

I'd have to look at mine, but as I recall, the nose of the pulley sits flush with the nose of the shaft.

what Dorian said.... flush, I do em daily at work.....

good thing you got that swapped, next it would have spun a 360 and puked the black stuff on father Damien's vestments...

:waytogo:the job is done the only problem was the back of the pully would
scrape the pump... a little grinding and paint its good to go!
