How does a stock 3/4 ton 4x4 front axle compare to a dana 44, I think its a GM 8.5 or 9.5. Is it worth swapping?

The D44 and corp 10 bolt are about the same strength wise. The corp 10 bolt is a 8.5" axle. Not worth the time to swap unless you're doing a gear change and the D44 has the gears you want.

GM used either a 10 bolt (~1980-1991) or a D44 (up to 1980 or so) in their solid axle 4WD trucks. There aren't many differences between the two and they are both very similar in strength.

As for the difference between a 1/2 ton (6 lug) or 3/4 ton (8 lug) 10 bolt/D44, there really isn't any except for the lug pattern.

There is no strength upgrade between a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton front end.

Both have an 8.5" ring gear, BTW.
