sounds legit, cant wait to see some pics. If i were to build a smaller rig it would be based off of the old toyotas. They offer awesome platforms for wheelers IMO,

Did I mention this is my wifes project!

We had to rebuild the turbo tranny, it was not downshifting very well into second, and from 1st to 2nd it was real tight. Most people thought it was the synchros, but nope turned out to be a busted snap ring. :D

Here is a shot of the tranny and t-cases put together after the 4.7 gear install too. I will see if I have more pics of the gear install on another camera.

Did you promise here that you wouldn't get mad when she went places that your K5 wouldn't go? :D

Cool build, I'll be following it.

why a waggy 44 up front? hows the width of that compared to the toy rear?

looks like a sweet build

3" wider than yota axle. I have a v6/turbo rear axle which is wider than 4cyl toy rear ends.

The toy front ends are notorious for blowing up birfields, until you upgrade to bobby longs which are bullet proof. But then your steering knuckles start to grenade or your $285 stock toy front hubs blow up usually just breaking the studs. So after upgrading you need to get the six shooter knuckles with ARP studs and ARP studs on the hubs.

So D44 with the upgrades leaves me worry free compared to most toy front ends.

You're off to a pretty good start, that thing looks like it's gonna be sweet when done. Keep us updated...

:) We are actually farther along than the post might lead on.

We have just moved into a new shop over the last two weeks, so this thing did not get finished as planned but should be on the trail in less than 2 weeks.

Ummm stock toyota birfields are stronger than stocker d44 shafts. The waggy 44 is a downgrade from a toy front rear.

I'll call BS on this one and I am a Toyota guy.:p:. A built Toy axle with Longs is definitely stronger than a built D44, but not the other way around IMO.

Seen plenty of broken birfs with even 31" tires. Not too many stock D44s like that though. I would say that a stock D44 is fine up to 35s. I've run plenty of Hammers trails on 37s with stock D44 front axle shafts and 297X u-joints that were tack welded to the ear. Only broke one in at least 15 runs out there. Then I upgraded to Superiors and CTMs and never looked back.

Now a Built Toy axle can handle 42s. And, its MUCH cheaper to build. As mentioned, ARP studs in the knuckles and hubs along with Bobby's cromoly hub gears and his 30 spliners will do the job. Still, the ring and pinion is the weak link in a 8" axle. Even those that are cryo'd.
