This year the powers that be decided it might be a good idea to have some sort of safety inspection.

This is not going to be some crazy inspection, we are just wanting to check for a couple things that you really need to go on just about any trail ride. We also have quite a few suggestions for things that you might want to take with you.

Here be the list with the required items being highlighted

Thanks for posting Eric. He's going to be running the inspection station at AreaBFE on Friday from 9AM to about 1PM. He will have some other volunteers helping out as well I'm sure.

As mentioned, this is not a hardcore deal. We're just doing this as a helpful measure for anyone that wants another pair of eyes looking things over. There a few things we consider mandatory and they are highlighted in bold above. These are things we're assuming most everyone already has.

I will be emailing a better copy of the list above to everyone registered.

As an added bonus, Kert over at DIY4x has whipped up a little prize to be given out to everyone that does volunteer to have their rig checked over.

I might have missed it in the list, but Battery tie-downs are a must.

I like the feel/flavor of this. Good job Scott and Eric. Poco Loco will be in line.:waytogo:

Hopefully I won't forget anyting on the list:doah:and we don't find anything that cannot be easily fixed like a missing starter bolt.:eek1:

There is very possible we missed important things and those will be remedied for next year but the list is as it stands.

Everyone listen here though battery tie downs are an important safety item.

Scott may be able to add them to the list of what we have when he sends them out.

The only items we are requiring though are the ones that are in bold

1. Seatbelts for everyone in the rig

2.Roll cage or factory hardtop

3. First aid kit

4.emergency food and drink

5. Working cb

6 front and rear tow points

7 tow strap

I should mention the tow points should be some sort of hook or shackle that a strap can be attached to. Your front axle is not a tow point. Your bumper is not a tow point, a trailer ball is not a tow point.

The tow point requirement is really alot for other folks as not having tow points can turn a 2 minute recovery into a 20 minute recovery.

This is a great idea and a good list. I printed it off and stuck it on the tool box where I will see it everyday.

Thank You guys

Battery Hold Downs?

I was wondering what everyone is using for battery hold downs. I have the stock type (small plate that bolts to the bottom of the tray on one side of the battery).

What about a small ratchet strap?

I was also looking at the bolt in or weld in battery box with a rail/bar that bolts across the top of the battery. I don't know if they will hold a regular (not Optima) type battery.

Will a ratched strap pass inspection for a battery hold down or will the stock hold down work?

Thanks for the input and can't wait to see everyone at BB!!

To me a ratchet strap is not a good tie down. Having said this i will be fixing this on my rig. lol:doah:

Shouldn't a spare tire or a way to repair a flat be mandatory? :dunno:

It is on the suggested list but not on the mandatory for one simple reason.

This is the first year for a safety inspection and we really want it to be more of a good looking over time for your rig. We did not want to stack a whole bunch of mandatory items ( which is very easy to do) simply because this whole thing is an experiment.

We are doing this to hopefully give newer folks to the game a guide and the guys who have been at it a while a refresher.

Scott and I both feel the same that we want to include not exclude as much as possible.

Eric, hit it on the head. We have chosen a very limited list for what we consider mandatory because we didn't want to make this way more difficult than it needed to be. My philosophy is that everyone coming to the Bash for the most part knows what they need to have to get the job done. We want to bring some items to everyone's attention so we are all thinking about the importance of coming with a prepared vehicle and maybe pointing out a few things that may get forgotten.

As for clarification on a battery tie-down, my judgement would be that if I put my hand on the top of the battery and try to move it, it shouldn't move in any direction. So yes, a ratchet strap is acceptable IMO as long as the battery doesn't move, which may require 2 straps depending on how you're set up for a tray.

The discussion of battery tie down is a perfect example of the purpose of our inspection. You guys are thinking about and discussing whether or not you are ready to go for 3 days of wheeling. That's what we really want.

Thanks for the explanation. I printed out the list and I'll try to have everything I can.

I see a very very very Important item missing from that list............ FIRE EXTINGUISHER

I see a very very very Important item missing from that list............ FIRE EXTINGUISHER

One of the reasons I posted the list is not just to let everyone know about it but also to add to the list for next year.

Gus is right guys a fire extinguisher is very important. I have one in my car, one in my Jimmy and one in Horton.

Its not on the list and we aren't going to be adding or subtracting to and from the list for this year but it would be a very good idea to add this little rather inexpensive item to the list.
