Blazer is stuck at gas station, need carb help...

So my truck was running fine till I was rolling up to a red light. The engine just died. Got it to turn over but not the way it's supposed to. Checked out the carb and it was leaking fuel from the banjo valve (i think) on the pass side. It runs rich and won't stay running unless giving constant gas. I think I blew a seal on the inside. Still a newbie so this is stumping me. I got a guy who has a edelbrock 1826. Looks like it would fit but I'm not positive. Dint want to leave her at the gas station long so it doesn't get towed. Would that carb fit? I have a 1406 right now. Thanks for your help!
 
Not a vacuum leak, could be a float, haven't taken it apart. Don't know alot about carbs, still learning, still a newb haha.

Something probably got a piece o crap that came through the filter and jammed the needle and seat open causing you to flood. Try smacking the needle and seat with a hammer lightly. Might unstick it.
 
Trace your fuel line- if it goes to the front passenger side of the block and is connected to a housing level with the cam, it's sure to be mechanical. You probably don't have an electric pump(which would be situated back by the tank), but if you did there's a quick fix for getting a piece crud out from between the needle and seat.....
 
The needle and seat are internal on the Edelbrock 1406 carb. You'll need to remove the top of the carb to check them and clean them properly.

The needles and seats are right under the floats when you take the top off.

Check the float height while you're into it.

Needle and seat is basically like a valve that stops the bowl from fill up with too much gas. When a piece of crud gets stuck in it the bowl gets constant fuel pressure flow causing it to spill over. With a little pressure the gaskets in the carb cannot contain the gas plus it just comes out of the vent.

This needle and seat is connected to the float. When the float raises in the gas in the bowl to the appropriate level the needle closes in the seat causing gas to stop entering the carb.

Wherever your fuel line comes into the carb the needle and seat is above that on the top of the body. Dont be afraid to tap it damn hard but obviously dont swing on the thing.

Yeah to clean them but to try to get it unstuck theres not need to take the carb apart. Tap the top of the body.

here is a pic with an arrow that points to the valve fuel is leaking from. if it helps at all i went back to the truck and tried to start it. it started up perfect but bogged down and cut off after about 10 seconds and was in the same condition i left it. the picture isnt my truck, its the carburetor i was talking about replacing it with. the 1826.

I know you don't have to take it apart to try and get the gunk loose out of the seat that is causing the flooding, but I've never had good luck just tapping it to get the **** out from between the needle and seat either.

If he takes some pictures of the linkages and the carb before he took the top off, it would be easy to take off and just clean it and be done. He's more then likely going to have to do it anyway to fix it right so it won't plague him again any time soon.

No your right. Just trying to get him home with it.
 
Thanks fellas, going to try and tap it today when I get off work. Guess I'll spray it with carb cleaner too just for good measure. Any chance it was just flooded real bad?
 
Sometimes a better way to un-stick a needle valve than beating on the carb is to use a pair of vise grips or pliers to clamp the rubber fuel line hose shut near the carb,and start the engine,or try too,until it runs out of gas--then unclamp the vise grips and start it again--usually the incoming rush of fuel will help dislodge the peice of gunk holding the needle open ..I have driven home a badly flooding carb by using the vise grips to squeeze the fuel line near,y shut,so it cant get enough gas thru it to let it flood--it wont want to run GOOD ,but you may be able to nurse it home that way..
 
Well it's pouring now that I get off work. I tried tapping with the handle of a screwdriver and no luck. Is there a specific spot I should tap? I'm going to go back and try again when it stops pouring and I'll also try to pinch the fuel line like Diesel said. Wish me luck! Oh and btw, it started up and idled great first try but bogged down again after about 30 seconds.
