Can anybody explain why the production totals went up from 1969 to 1979 and in 1980 they dropped off and then increased in a few years and then decreased again until in 1991 there almost the same small amount made as in 1969? :dunno: I am going to guess Jimmy Carter???

Round headlights definitely rule...but I just Googled U.S. economy 1980 and apparently the 1980-82 recession was worse than the one we are in now and possibly as bad as the great depression...funny I don't remember much about it but I was still in high school...sooooo...Jimmy Carter did do it...and OPEC...

I wonder if these numbers include those made for military and police?

Also, of the 1969 manufactured 4,935, how many do you think have survived....and of the 1991 manufactured 7332 how many of those have survived?

Speculation, but surely more 1991's are out there than 1969's.

The 1991's would be a smaller percentage of the market than the 1969 was....that makes the 1991 extremely rare...

250 million people....7332 Blazers....that's one Blazer per every 35,000 people sold in 1991.

That's one 1991 Blazer per every 44,000 people....

Does the last part of the VIN actually reflect a vehicles place in that production total? My K5 has a date of production = "Aug 1991", I've always been curious as to how close to the last one it was.
 
The number must be a running total of some kind not specific to a given vehicle. Mine= 150403.
 
I suspect military is included, as I recall the first batch of CUCV's were 1984 (could be wrong, but that's the earliest year I hear of) and the numbers jumped way up then. I know there were some '85's as well, no idea when the largest "batches" were procured.

Interesting to me that the numbers didn't spike in 1981 when the bodystyle changed. Didn't really in 1973 either, but sales were strong in 1973, and actually fell substantially for 1981. 350 diesel debacle probably wasn't helping GM in that time frame.

So...you think the new look scared buyers off or do you thing gas mileage was so important that it wasn't a viable option.

Also, who decides how many are produced in a given year...did dealers "order" them and that's what they went by? or did they say make a nominal 5000 and however many more were ordered than that is what it is?

Don't know how the car factory / dealership sales thing worked back then.
 
Wonder what happened in 1976 to make them stop making full verts?
 
GM quit selling convertibles in 1976 all across the board.

Fuel was more expensive in the early 80's than it is now.
