So I'm in the process of painting my 82 k5. I'm painting it 2 tone, orange and white. The old girl started as silver, then the original owner painted the "middle" blue, then he painted the whole thing white. The texture is gone from the fiberglass top. I've finished the rust repair, and the rough sanding, and am in the process of priming (rustoleum high build filler primer). The high fill leaves a raised texture, I'm wondering if I should just paint the white right over the primer without sanding, or if I should go with a smooth finish on the cap. If I paint directly over the primer, without knocking down the texture with 320, will it adhere good, or will I have problems? FYI, I'm painting with rustoleum, not base/clear, as this is a dd that sees heavy camping/wheeling use.

Not that I am an expert, but I would use red scotchbrite pads on it. This will break the glaze of the primer without going to the level of a smooth surface. (Which would require fresh primer anyway)
This is what I did to mine when I painted it with single stage Nason. So far it's holding well.

I’m with 68 above… I think you need to do something to the primer, particularly high build primer. I had an experimental top i’ll call it, where I sanded it smooth. I thought it looked better vs texture.

I did mine with undercoating and left the orange peel texture.
I like it better that way.
But to each their own
