Hi guys,

I've been looking to get a K5 for sometime now. I came across an '85 K5 Blazer that has been in the same family since new. It's a Silverado and has a 6.2L diesel with a Banks turbo. It's all stock and hasn't really been altered at all (stock height, stock rally wheels, original interior). It's weathered some, but hasn't been abused by any means. I know it's tough to judge without a picture, but what are the rough values of something like this? Seems like I see them online going for between $10,000 and $30,000. This one is located in California.

Thanks.

What are they asking for it ? You would have to see it in person ...
How's the exterior ?
How's the Interior ?
How's the drive train ... 85 with 6.2L would have come stock with 700r4 ..?
How's the rust ?

You have to have answers to understand a price.

If it is in top condition you may see $20K ... I have owned my 85 since new., 40 years now .. before restoration, I would have paid about $10 K as it was in good shape .. 85/6.2L/ 700r4 / NP208.

After my restoration, I have turned down a lot more than that ... mainly it goes to my daughter.

Condition and personal preferences are why the values are all over the place. Rust free but weathered is fine with me, these trucks are old. Rust kills value for me, its cheaper to buy a good one than to start chasing rust repair on a cheap rusty one. Personally, I wouldn't buy a 6.2 diesel, so the value for me is very low. Other guys like the 6.2 and will pay good money for the same truck.

Whats your budget? Does this k5 check all the things you want? Do you want a 6.2?

I would be willing to spend more for a truck that has exactly (or very close) what i want. If i have to make lot of changes/updates to make it what i want, then i would pay less for it.

In Ca 85 diesel means no bi annual emissions test = more value.

Banks 6.2 turbo kit,highly sought-after = move value

Un molested suspension and driveline, means no PO fubars to redo =more value.

I wouldn't take 20k for my 77, and she is not perfect by any means, and modified.

Personal opinion, I wouldn’t pay up for a 6.2 with a banks or not. An og unfortified 6.2 is only a matter of time before it snaps the crank at the wrong time. So for me the value wouldn’t be as high.

Which brings the main point is the truck is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. You can ballpark it with comparisons to what’s for sale out there but just because somebody got 30k on bring a trailer or some other auction site doesn’t mean they are all worth that much. Some sellers think that but reality is a bitch. They will sit on it if they are asking too much.

Do your research. Look for others. In the end it comes down to what YOU are willing to pay and if they are willing to take it.

Thanks guys. I'm going to get a closer look at it in a couple of days and will be able to drive it. I prefer having the 6.2L as it will be just a cruiser and I'm somewhat familiar with them and I prefer to not have to mess with the smog checks here. It is a 6.2L/700R4/NP208 combo.

I have 4 6.2 or 6.5 powered vehicles. With 11 spare engines in cans or trucks. I like them. I love what the Banks turbo does to the drivability.

However, as written above there are issues. I have never seen a picture of a broken 6.2 crank shaft without an equally bad harmonic balancer next to it. I would suggest a Fluidamper balancer gets installed if you buy the truck.

Starters, starter mounts are also an issue until they get sorted out and then you don’t have to worry about it again.

What will drive you nuts is the V-belts. The diesel is not kind to them and they don’t last long while needing adjustment often. Swapping to serpentine is easy as far as getting the brackets. But, the water pump has to be changed, the alternator might or might not bolt on and the A/C compressor most likely won’t bolt on. There are actually 2 generations of 6.5 serpentine set ups. The alternator and compressor swap sides between the two generations.

Not to hijack, but keeping 11 spare 6.2’s in various forms should tell anybody what they need to know about 6.2’s.

But if the op wants a 6.2 it’s cool.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I currently have an ‘83 GMC K2500 with a 6.2L and my dad has an ‘84. We’ve done Fluidampers on both. I’m relatively familiar with their quirks and issues. Found out the guy is asking $12,000 for this particular Blazer. I’m going to check it out closer tomorrow.

Glad you have experience with the 6.2. You aren’t going in blind.

I didn’t intend to get so many spares and have never had the need for one either. But when the government was auctioning them off for basically nothing a dozen or more years ago it is hard to say no.

Just a quick follow-up. I checked out that Blazer today. It was quite a bit rougher than I initially thought and had a lot of blow by. I passed on it as I'm not looking for that big of a project right now. Thanks again for the help.
