So , I'm driving home today and my K5 starts to sputter and finally dies in the middle of the road. tried to start , turns over but will not crank. finally had to call my father to come tow it home.getting fuel , grounded spark plug wire to header with screwdriver , did not see any tell tale blue spark , so , easy enough....................either the coil or ignition module right????
Go to advance buy both and install.......still no sign of spark when grounding the plug wire........however when I grab the screwdriver blade while it is being turned over it will nail me pretty good.............................sooo I need to know what else it could possibly be.Oh I can also dump a little gas into the carb and it will still not start,,,,,,which normally would signal a fuel delivery problem(if it started when i did this). please help as this is my only vehicle.

the rotor is gear driven off the distributor/cam. there is an electric pickup in the distributor that he was referring to.

What does this electric pickup look like and whereabouts in the distributer would i find it ? Sorry if I sound dumb , but I do not recall ever having to replace this item in any of my previous vehicles. Sorry also for the lack of info in my original post , my k5 is a 1983 , 305 , 700-r4 , no on board computer or anything of that nature if that matters or helps.

The magnetic pick up coil is located inside the distributor underneath the rotor and weight and spring assembly. It has a white and green wire coming out of it that plugs into the module with a yellow plastic insulator. The magnetic pick up coil can be tested using an ohm meter. With the green and white wires disconnected from the module, touch the meter leads to the terminals of these wires. The reading should be between 800-900 ohms. A normal reading is about 830-850. But as long as it is within the 800-900 range then the part is good.
