Hey guys,
i am planning to build a tropy-rally-offroad-vacation tour truck.
Planned events to drive:

Dresden - Breslau rally (Drezno Wroclaw)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1TULKlfSJc

Superkarpata
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsvd6TbcHhQ

maybe some Desert rallys as well as trips to Iceland, and "normal" offroading.

rock crawling is not really an issue, cause we don't have any rockgardens or anything like that in germany.

so what i have in mind:
wheelbase between 100" and 110"
as few electricity as possible
as bulletproof as possible

engine:
Cummins 6bt with about 300hp

or a factory new MAN D0836 6,9 liters with about 340hp and 920 lbft build to my specs and build to last about 900.000 mls for about 6500 bucks

transmission:
i thought about
4l80e full manual can it handle the torque ?
Allison 1000 pretty expensive has to be electronically controlled
NV4500 only 5 gears manual transmission
Eaton fuller 13 speed how adapt it to the T/C?

transfer case :
Atlas II or 4 not sure,

axles:
Fast Unimog 416 axles with overall ratio 5.3:1

i have read that the K5 frame wont last with a cummins with out frame strenthening.
so i thought maybe it is simpler to swap engine trans t/c combo in a unimog 416 shorten the wheelbase and put a blazer body or regular cab/ flatbed on it.

so what do you think?

4l80E is never gonna hold that. Frame will need to be boxed and braced.

The 950ftlbs is unreasonable for standard light duty truck running gear.

i thought so,
will the 4l80e hold up the cummins? it was my favorite choice.
or should i get some thing else
?

Duramax/Allison? :dunno:

that would require as far as i know a complete donor truck?
the problem is they are very rare here in Germany, only 1 (one) used truck is now for sale

that would require importing a truck form the USA.

so an allison or nv4500 would be the transmission of choice?

well if you have access to a MAN engine, what transmission usually comes behind it?
The way you are doing your project you want to try and stay simple, the MAN would have a manual transmission either 6 speed or 10 speed if not mistaken, you will need to put a divorced tcase since none of these trucks came with a tcase that I know of.
You could also look into some IVECO engines, I don't know the sizes but I know they are very common in Germany and they range from small trucks to big rigs, so I am sure you can find something that suits your needs.:dunno:

A built 4L80E will hold the cummins. 300hp 6bt should be roughly 600-650 ftlbs of torque so yeah the transmission, properly built could reliably cope with that.

O btw Im getting a 70 series cruiser boner from the superkarpata video btw :D
