Can I bleed the brakes on a 2001 Silverado 1500 abs with disks? or do i need to take it to a shop with a machine?

Just like regular brakes. I cut a line when I was doing my SAS and it bled out like a regular old non abs system.

Nothing different about bleeding brakes on an '01. Just keep in mind that if you get air into the ABS valve module, its very hard to get out.

Most service manuals warn you to never force fluid backwards in an ABS system. In other words don't just push the pistons back to replace the pads. Crack the bleeder and then push the pistons back. Top off fluid when done. But as far as bleeding, it's the same as non-ABS.

How would someone get air in the ABS? Would it be possible to get air in the ABS when changing a caliper?

Probably not, but as a precaution don't leave the brake line open for longer than necessary. Changing brake lines are a different story...

Not exactly the same as regular brakes. Do Not Pump the pedal on ABS! That can cause cavitation in the ABS valve body and cause air pockets to form. Which are hard to get out.

Just Push the pedal all the way to the floor once and open bleeder. Then repeat till pedal is firm.
Once again Do Not Pump pedal.

Thanks. I was able to get it bleed. I had someone someone push down on the pedal and then I opened the bleeder screw valve while the brake pedal was still depressed. Then I closed the valve before the brake pedal was released. After several attempts I have clear fluid coming out with no bubbles.

You could get air in the ABS by letting the reservoir go dry while bleeding. It would be very unlikely to push it up from a bleeder.
