Well picked up the kid from school today and saw the battery light came on. Looked at the voltmeter and it was down around 9 or so. HMMMMM
Took it home and thought well maybe cables need cleaned and not getting good contact. So I parked it and later went to move it into the garage and when I fired it up the alternator started makeing bad sounds. Clue #1
So take the old alt off and have wifey grab a new one on way home from work. No problem. 15 minutes and its in. Fire it up and no change. OK
In the paperwork for the new alternator it said I should change the voltage regulator at the same time. Well never heard of that before but OK.
So start to take the voltage regulator off and notice wires from the regulator lead to the under the hood fuse panel.
So I open the fuse panel and there is a fuse labeled Alt.
Yep its bad. Find fuse in garage and voila'. Alternator was bad anyway but I was going to run down to the parts store and get a new voltage regulator for $25.00. I would have gotten home and still no worky.
FYI its a 1991 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0
