Why does this always happen . . .
1982 CC in sig.

Decided to do an IP swap two days before a scheduled trip to BC, went fairly smoothly but,

Key in run, engine off, everything looks fine.

Key in run, engine running, the fusible link off the distribution block on the firewall starts to smoke heavily within 30 seconds, and fries. Have been swapping in pieces of small-gauge wire while experimenting so I don't blow the rest of the harness.

All I did was swap the IP to a 4911 and relocate the lift pump to the frame rail by the pass. fuel tank instead of on the inner fender. Already experimented with disconnecting the lift pump.

Ideas? I'm supposed to leave tomorrow at noon . . . .:mad::mad::mad:

I would be looking for a pinched wire somewhere if you did not have this problem before you started.

Yeah, that was my first thought too, I'll check a second time to be 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure I've covered it all. When I swapped the cab, I took the entire harness out, cleaned, inspected, reassembled, and I've got 30K on the truck since. I know that harness pretty well :rolleyes:

Went over the harness again, couldn't find any damaged/pinched wires, however . . .

I noticed that with the key on, engine off, if I switched the blower and lift pump off to quiet things down, the alternator 'hums' or 'whines'. It's a CS144 that I swapped in when I did the serpentine belt system. If I unplug the 4-pin connector, it stops.

Anybody want to check their alternator (CS130 would be the same, so any Chevy V8 newer than '91?) and see if it does the same thing?

I did the CS144 swap two weeks ago and just went to check it, it does not make the noise you are describing. Although it an '87 K5

Wow, that was quick, thanks very much :bow::bow::bow::bow:

I've been wondering about my swap, as I read something about a resistor on one of the wires. I didn't do anything like that, and it's been charging fine it seems--any idea what that could do to the alternator/batteries? Might be on the right track finally . . . .
