BAD NIGHT!! I LOST THE REAR END OF MY 1990 BLAZER AND WHEN WE TRIED TO MOVE IT ONTO A TOW TRUCK IT BLEW A 2" TEAR TYPE HOLE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE CASING. CAN THIS TEAR BE REPAIRED SO I WON'T HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE CASING.

Usually it can be reparied, my friend blew his differential and it was welded back together. You could always use this as an oppotunity and/or excuse to upgrade your axle to a beefier and stronger one, such as the 14bolt =) They are usually pretty cheap, but make sure its the same gear ratio as your front setup.

It'll be easier and cheaper to buy another complete rear end...
assuming your truck is stock . If so it'll have the 10 bolt rear, dime a dozen diff. Check the For sale forum, there might be someone nearby with a good 10 bolt for sale for you.

Besides the cost factor you wont have any other suprises waiting for you, once you hit the trails again. Who knows what else was affected by a shear in the metal.

I would get a 12 bolt and go with a dual shock setup if you plan to have it last a bit longer than a 10bolt, best thing is a 12 bolt still has 6 bolt holes for the rims.
the shocks will bolt to opposite sides of the housing, otherwise its a direct bolt in upgrade swap.
it would be quicker and easier to just buy another used 10 bolt, then it will swap in with no fabricating whatsoever.
I find replacing parts with their identical match makes the job go smootly and quickly.
make sure you get the same gear ratio, or it will rip your transfer case up :)

Theres no replacement for displacement!
I want a big block!
