Blown TC on 85 Jimmy

My stupid brother broke his TC in his 85 Jimmy. He went and got a 208 to replace it but guess what it doesnt fit Now I get the call about what he need to do. He said he found out he had a 241 in there. It must have had a part time kit on it cause It didnt run 4wd all the time. Ok so heres my questions. Can he get the 208 to fit somehow? How about a 205? His tranny is a SM265. I tell you its nice when a Wyotech grad calls you up asking for mechanic help lol. Anyway thanks in advance for he help.

Does your brother have all of his facts straight?

241s were not offered in '85. The stock case was almost certainly a 208. I understood that a 241 from a 89 or so K5 was a "bolt-in" replacement. If somebody swapped in a 241 from another application, then you'll just have to reverse engineer it to find out what is there and what your options are.

I am sure it was a typo, and they meant SM465.

The reason the 241 he tried swapping in didn't work is that it has the wrong input gear most likely. I would suggest fixing the 208 or finding a 208 out of a truck with a 32 spline output (Either TH 400 or SM 465 from 81-up).

Yes I ment SM465. OK thats kindof what I thought. I didnt think a 241 was offered that year. Would this just be an adapter that someone could have put on? So your saying that a 241 from a 89 would bolt right in? Ill give him a call in the morning and tell him to look for some sore of adapter thats on there.

No he bought a 208 and it wouldnt work. a 241 was in the orrigianlly. He said it was definatly a 241. I asked him like 4 times and he said he was looking right at it and it was a 241.

The most common 27 spline 241 cases out of an '89 with a mechanical speedo IS a direct bolt in, I know because I have one in my '85. BUT the th700's were 27 spline rears while the 465 was 32 spline so if he could find a 208 or 1989 only 241 that came from behind another 465 or th400, it will bolt in. Just make sure it's a 32 spline unit.

I'm still confused about what part is not fitting. Is it the input splines? What about swapping the input gear over from the broken 'case?

There isnt enought splines on the 208 he bought I guess. I think he finnaly got everything figured out because he stopped calling me about it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Anyway thanks for the help guys!
